issues with S.M.A.R.T.

A friend of mine said that I should not enable SMART on my hard drive because it can actually damage it. I'm not too confident in his expertise however so I come here. Is it possible for smart to damage the hard drive? I'd obviously want to have it on because it can prevent data loss but not if it will cause harm.

I don't know of any cases where SMART caused drive errors that weren't already there...
