Issues with Logitech K400 keyboard/touch pad

The touch pad seems very fickle sometimes. I want to use it to move the pointer when I'm on the couch, but sometimes it gets locked into scrolling up/down a page instead and I can't get the pointer to move. What could be causing this?
 
How far are you from the computer where the receiver is plugged in? I know that I've had connection issues with Unifying devices in the past. I have that keyboard and haven't had any issues, but I only ever use it about 3-6 ft from the computer.
 
About 8 feet. But the thing is all the other keys always work even when the touch pad is deciding to scroll instead of move the pointer.
 
did you get water/sweat/etc on it?
my k400 touchpad seems to not respond when my fingers get slightly sweaty.
