Issues with a CPU

Ok guys...I've gotta question since this has NEVER happened to me before.

I've got a Gigabyte GA-8I945GZME-RH w/ a Celeron 420 in it...works perfect.

A friend gave me an E6300...it won't even post!

First off..it's not the cpu that's bad.

E6300 will boot up in the Dell that it came out of...my 420 will NOT boot in it.

420 WILL boot in my system, but the E6300 won't.

So what gives!!

The 420 = 800 FSB while the e6300 = 1066, but it should just downclock and according to Gigabyte's site, the e6300 is a compatible chip.

Any ideas???

The mb that wont boot cause it cant read the cpu code.
Check your bios # then go to Gigabyte and see if there is a updated bios

Pentium E6300? that came out way after your mobo did so it cant recognize it. just check for a BIOS update like john3850 said.

Yeah Intel in all its great wisdom came out with two chips both named E6300. The bios should work though.

Well..I popped the cpu out, it had a small bit of gunk (thermal paste maybe?) anyway, works fine now.

Now..the celeron 420 still won't work in the Dell mobo...any ideas on that one? I've checked the cpu and it's fine.
