Issue with RDP - How to restart through RDP?

First, I log into my computer using RDP many times throughout the day. I logged in earlier and everything was fine, then exited. Got back on later and some of my icons had been moved as if it were run at a much lower resolution and rearranged. I also noticed that in the taskbar, icons for programs weren't showing up.

I checked the task manager and only see about 15 programs running (processes) but at the bottom of the screen a count of 35.

Something isn't right for sure, I wanted to restart the computer till I realized you can't do it through RDP in the start menu. Any way around this?

You could run this from the command line or Run... box

SHUTDOWN -r -t 01

This issues a shutdown and reboot after t seconds...in this case, it's 01 seconds.

Alternatively, you could use programs like Poweroff to shutdown/reboot when using RDC.

Thanks, I'll try that, anything else I should do to make sure there isn't anything on my computer that could create an issue like a virus?

Shutdown/? do not work on untrust network! If it do, you should hire new IT group ASAP! Set up VPN for security. There is flaw in remote desktop so until this fix sent by microsoft port 3389 should not be open to untrust networks or lions may bite you hindparts hard!

I tried reboot and found new issues. It says my profile had some issue and then could not load it and then logged me onto a temporary profile.

I don't see a clock in the bottom right hand corner either.

keldysh, a VPN setup is in the planning and I should have them created soon.

Could this been the hard drive? If so, I may have to shut down and do without RDP for some time.

Another thing, the last time I connected in, browsing the itnernet through RDP just didn't seem normal. It seemed as if web pages were loading slower for some odd reason. I know that sounds stupid since RDP uses an internet connection itself, but for some reason that was occurring incase it has any relevance.

After the reboot, Norton did NOT start up on its own. I'm looking at the task manager and don't see it either, here is what I see

Now I can log into my account and my settings are all there, but again, Norton didn't launch. pretyt much the same set of programs are running

I'm seirously considering just shutting the computer down till I can have a look at it myself but won't be able to for another week or so. It's something I use on a daily basis but I guess I'd be fine without it, incovenience, but ship happens?

From command prompt try CHKDSK N: /F where N is driveletter of root drive. If you have other drive do them too. Remember if system run services on disk, RESTART system REQUIRED. Be PATIENT as this may take while!

General ROT is RUN CHKDSK when lion act up!

I just did that, where would the logs be kept?

Should I be seeing it run after I login? It said it would run at next reboot but since I'm not there I can't see what's on the screen till login

I'm not seeing any log for the chkdsk that was supposed to run, I see lots of errors under Application in Event Viewer for error ID's 1000-1002. Also, all the logged items with source "userenv" have errors, here is what one says:

Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Are you log on as system administrator? If so you should STOP this! Without knowing about network (mainly GPO stuffs) you have at plant tracking become difficult. If you have no one on site to help limp along unless you feel security compromise put data at risk. SCRAM it if you do!

If I understand you correctly, they can read what is being sent between computers?

If so, I have nothing to hide (Maybe this is another issue?)

From that log though, should things be fine now?

Looks like there was a power outage for about 2 hours explaining some of the issues. Maybe the system didn't shut down correctly..

RDP do employ encryption however if high level trap install on path correspondence tx/rx impositions are read easily by third parties! You only worry here if you are spy and know this right? ;p

If you do not have AUTO END PROGRAM flag set in registry, hang up application could prevent system from responding on shutdown request from UPS manager softwares. Since this is XP workstation you could use HIBERNATE features and have datum written to HIBERFIL.SYS immediately upon power fail trip detect signal on UPS input for shore sides. Of course you must set BIOS power fail option to LAST STATE or ALWAYS ON or system will not turn on until person depress power button.

Actually, Norton AntiVirus still isn't showing up in the task bar, I'm using the Corporate edition if it matters.

Sym A/V do not echo icon in systray when access computer through remote desktop.

System time is OFF by default too! Change this with taskbar option.
