Hello all,

So I'm seeing my system freeze up during 2 new games I just got. Here are the stats of hardware:

ATI Radeon Pro 9700, 256mb
AMD 2.8ghx processor
1.5 GB DDR

This is only occuring when playing Doom 3 or Star Wars Battlefront (usually about after 20 minutes of play), so I believe the video card is overheating.

The case temp is staying between 35-40. Is there software to track temp on videocard? Any other suggestions? I have tried turning down all of the graphics and anti-aliasing, but the issue is still occuring.

Thank you again in advance.

First, is your processor a 2800+ or an OCed 2.8Ghz of a certain type?

Second, check for dust buildup or anything blocking airflow from your fans.

Third, run something non-graphic intensive that keeps the cpu at 100% usage for several hours. If the lock up occurs at this point, it's not your video card it's the cpu

Fourth, if your GPU is overheating try to underclock (or reduce your overclock) incrementally to see if the problem disappears.

And no, short of adding a thermal probe of some type there is no way to check the temperature of a stock 9700 pro with software

The system isn't overclocked in any way. I'll check for dust build up and blow it out with canned air. I run other games (city of heroes) for 6 hours at a time and have no issues. Where would be the best place for a prob...on the other side of fan so that I get temp of air blowing out?

I'm going to swap video cards with my g/f's system to test things out. It's a 9500 Pro 256-bit. Wish me luck.

Huh? a 256 bit 9500 Pro is a 9700. 9500 Pros are 128 bit.

To test if it's overheating run with the side off and a fan blowing in, or download Radlinker and decrease the core clock speed.

Hm...maybe hers is a 128 then..I could have swore the later 9500 Pro's were 256's. I'd have to look it up.

My 9700pro had crappy stock cooling. Noisy and not very effective. Installed a zalman heatpipe with a quiet fan blowing on it and performance went way up.

Do you have have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your system?
