Issue with Microsoft Streets & Trips File

I have MS Streets & Trips 2013 installed on a Win 8.1 system. Every few days, a pop-up appears that indicates that "StreetsOLkShim.exe" has stopped working and will be closed. This file is a normal component of Streets & Trips. What isn't normal is why it starts at all when I am not using the app. I have looked at Task Manager and can see that it is running sometimes but I have no idea what triggers it to start. It does not appear in Start-up programs in Task Manger nor in any of the Scheduled Tasks. I changed the name of the file temporarily to see if I could force an error message from the trigger when it could not find the file -- but nothing happened. I did confirm that the file is very necessary because the app will not start without it.

I Googled the issue and could find others who have the same problem with most recent versions of the app. , however, no valid answers were to be found. Even Microsoft's forum did not answer it. The Microsoft rep wrote how to do a "clean boot". That was nice but did not answer the question. This file starts after the system is running for a while and not when the system boots.

Anyone have experience with this issue or suggestions?

I'm not sure what it does, but a cursory examination suggests that StreetsOlkShim is used for integration with Outlook for e-mail stuff.

More information about the crash would be useful. When it crashes, click the thing to show you more details. Details like the faulting module would be very interesting to see.

You may also try a program called Autoruns

I ran it but the program is not listed. I previously ran Process Monitor and Process Explorer and the program was listed but I could not identify the process that triggered it to run.

I received the same error report on 7/4 & 6/25. Before that, It seemed like I was seeing it almost daily. I have not seen for the last couple of days.

I am using Office 2010 Home & Business. It has an add-on for Streets & Trips but it shows as being inactive

You can also try reinstalling it in say Win 7 compatability mode and see if will work
then.

It works fine with 8.1. I am just trying to find out what starts the one program within the app. The error messages only appear when I am not using the app.

I think I have discovered the culprit. As I mentioned earlier, I changed the name of the file to see if that would generate any error or "Event" messages. I discovered (Events)that the Windows Installer (MsiInstaller) was trying to access the file so it could reconfigure Streets & Trips. It could not find the file (since I changed its name) so it closed. So I assume the Win installer was opening the file all the time and then it crashed because something was missing that Windows wanted to reconfigure. I have no clue as to what the installer is trying to change, or why. I will go through the multitude of Win Scheduled Tasks and see if something is there. Previously, I was hunting only for Streets.

If that is the case, download and run CCleaner. It can fix these type of errors. Probably a registry key that should not be there,

I run CCleaner regularly. I do not see anything in the Registry Cleaner results that appear related to this.
