I do volunteer work for the local cable access station. Been doing it for about a year. I applied for a couple of jobs with the company for shits and giggles, never expecting a call back. They called back. I have an interview set up for one this Thursday.

Here's the problem. Job number one is a 3 hour drive away, and it's part time. They can only guarantee 20 hours a week. Pay is $17/hr, which is great. However, I've done some calculations and it's not enough to live on with so few hours. It's on call too so there's no fixed schedule. It could be any day of the week, varying from week to week and even day to day. That would make getting a second job very difficult. Nobody is that flexible these days. This job is in my field of study and I'm 100% qualified. While I'd love the job, I cannot do it logistically with only $17,000 a year before taxes. That's significantly less than what I make now doing my menial car rental job. This job is a permanent position though.

Job number 2 is full time on a one year contract, filling in for a mat leave. It pays $40,000/yr. I'm somewhat under-qualified for it. They want a minimum 3yr experience according to the ad. I have under two years. The intricacies of the job are nothing I couldn't learn. I feel confident I could grasp it. It's also half the distance from home.

I spoke to my parents, who agreed that Job 1 isn't doable. My dad's was a well respected & successful businessman so I take his word on stuff like this.

So my question is, how would I politely decline the interview for the first job? I want to stress that I'd much rather take job 2, but I don't want to come off like some asshat trying to start at the top. This is my first real opportunity in some time keep in mind, so I don't want to blow it.

It seems to me that your reasons for not taking Job 1 are fairly justifiable and reasonable. I would just explain to them that the job would not be economically viable for you and would be too uncertain of a situation for you to reliably fulfill your needs. But that the second job would be a more than feasible situation.

Question, why aren't you working for your dad?

Back on topic:I agree with Born. Just explain you cannot afford to take the job. Besides, with the other job, you're picking up valuable experience you could throw into your resume.

Serious? Who the hell would do a 3 hour commute for a part-time job over a full time job that pays more?

i think one is easily explainable. just say its three hours away, you dont want to move for a part time job, and you cant commute that distance.

My dad is retired now. Owned a construction/civil engineering firm. I used to work for him in the office.

Why did I apply? Really just to get my name on file with HR. Cleaning rental cars for $24k isn't exactly what I want to be doing for my whole life. I went to school for broadcast journalism. That's what I want to be doing.

I wrote them back and politely declined, basically rewording what Born said. Asked if Job 2 was still on the table, and said I was very interested and confident. Hopefully they'll consider me for job 2.
