Issue with external HDD and filesize limit...

Hey guys, so i have 500 gb external HDD that i'm in the process of adding media to for my brother, so he can watch shows and movies on his xbox360 while away at college. I learned it had to be formatted to FAT32 in order to work on the 360. (-_-)

So i've been running into the file limitation of no more than 4gb's in filesize when adding stuff, i've got folders that vary anywhere from under 1gb to 20gb. Upon doing some googling, the only answer i could find was to format it to NFTS, which in my case isn't an option obviously.

Is there a way to get around this? I tried compressing a file just to see what happened and it didn't even compress it enough to make a difference and when i tried adding it to the external just to see what happened i still had no luck.

Any ideas?

I don't think there are any ways around it using standard drives. Maybe get an external drive with a network interface or NAS that the 360 can stream from?

ahh, i'm really not in the place to make any sort of purchase.. is there a way to properly compress or something?

If it is media (AKA BD rips) you can probably just rip to a smaller file size by going lower resolution such as 720p, and maybe using 10-bit x264 compression (limited playback support - check playback device first).

sorry... and how do i do that?

360 can read HFS+. You need a Mac or MacDrive though.

Hmm intersting,

it just so happens that the external im trying to put stuff on is actually made for a mac... i bought it at best buy in a hurry and didn't realize it was made for macs 'till i got home. I almost took it back but then thought about it and tried it, and it worked like a normal HDD (duh lol)

Is that what you mean by macdrive? I didn't quite understand by the link you gave me, is that just software that can format to HFS+ or something?

Its what everyone recommended for reading/writing HFS+ on Windows when Googling HFS+ Windows. This now comes up but I haven't tried it. They both have trials so you probably just copy everything now then not have to worry about it until your brother comes back from college. 🙂

Ok, but your saying HFS+ will work on 360?
