Israelis attack African migrants during protest against refugees

Seventeen arrested after protesters go on 'unbridled rampage' targeting African workers and looting shops serving refugees

Demonstrators have attacked African migrants in Tel Aviv in a protest against refugees and asylum-seekers that indicates an increasingly volatile mood in Israel over what it terms as "infiltrators".

Miri Regev, a member of the Israeli parliament, told the crowd "the Sudanese are a cancer in our body". The vast majority of asylum-seekers in Israel are from Sudan and Eritrea.

Around 1,000 demonstrators took part in the demonstration on Wednesday night, waving signs saying: "Infiltrators, get out of our homes" and "Our streets are no longer safe for our children." A car containing Africans was attacked and shops serving the refugee community were looted. Seventeen people were arrested.

A reporter for the Israeli daily Maariv described it as an "unbridled rampage" and explosion of "pent-up rage".

"Suddenly one of [the protesters] noticed that in one of the cars waiting for traffic to move were two young dark-skinned men, apparently foreign workers. For the hundreds of inflamed and enraged young people, that was all they needed. Within minutes, they dismantled – there is no other word to describe it – the car and its passengers. Some of them smashed the windows with their hands and rocks, others kicked the car, bent the plastic parts and tried to attack the people inside. 'I'm not from Sudan, I'm not from Sudan,' the driver tried to tell the assailants, but nobody was listening at that stage."

The protest followed a claim on Sunday by the prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, that "illegal infiltrators [were] flooding the country" and threatening the security and identity of the Jewish state. "This phenomenon is very grave and threatens the social fabric of society, our national security and our national identity," he said.

The government is constructing a fence along the Egypt-Israel border to deter migrants and asylum-seekers, and is building what will be the world's largest detention centre, capable of holding up to 11,000 people.

It is also seeking court approval to deport up to 3,000 refugees back to South Sudan, despite concerns over the humanitarian crisis there and human rights violations.

Israel's police chief has urged the state to allow asylum-seekers to work in order to avoid economic and social problems.

So, Israel is only for Jews eh? How is this not a racially motivated attack on innocent people? And Netanyahu looks suspiciously like a pure racist to me with the talk about the need to preserve Israel for the one true race.

If I believed in the concept that the world, in 1948, gave to the Jews, all of Israel as national homeland for only only Jews regardless of nation of origin, then this current African issue should be easy to resolve.

As we can also note, the original founders of the nation of Israel were primarily of Eastern and Western European origin. As they promptly, post 1948, actively helped Jews from Arab countries as far South as Yemen emigrate to Israel. And with the only criteria of are you a Jew or not, the same offer was open to African Jews, Chinese Jews, and all Jews widely dispersed all over the world for the second great Jewish diaspora.

Which I observe, as MHO, was largely true from 1948 to about the year 2000. But post the year 2000, mainly Israeli crazed settler parties and equally nutty ultra orthodox Jews are demanding and getting ever more restrictive policies on what foreign nationals desiring to emigrate to Israel can qualify for defining their selves as a Jew. A class comprised of even many USA practicing Jews.

Then their is another issue complicating the forum thread question. Until the first Palestinian infantata, Israelis relied on mainly the underclass of Palestinians they made into third class citizens as a source of cheap almost slave labor, but afterword Israel has imported cheap labor from all over the world.

Just because you want people to start believing a lie, does not mean people will "wake up" and start believing the lie.

What these people did was wrong, and the government arrested lots of them for it. Protests are allowed, just like in any free society, but once it turned violent the cops moved in.

As for allowing black Jews into Israel, they do. Beta Israel has been accepted into Israel.

As for allowing black Jews into Israel, they do. Beta Israel has been accepted into Israel.

There's still plenty of issues with acceptance of black Jews in Israel, as noted in this BBC report for example sake. However, even if black Jews were perfectly accepted in Israel, that would do nothing to justify the bigotry against Sundanese refugees and others who aren't Jewish.

I just find it odd that some jews are quite racist; they were hounded out of every country they went to and were slaves for millenia. India is the only country that gave them refuge after the Romans destroyed their temple.

western states have not behaved better than israel when under stress. when london was bombed, the brits didn't try to sue for peace and give concessions to the germans, they bombed their cities into dust as reprisal.. america didn't have its cities bombed, but it nuked japan. israel does but a few targeted strikes against palestinian terrorists when it gets hammered with thousands of rockets, and people spew venom, kind of says it all.
