Goel Ratzon has allegedly fathered 59 children by 23 wives.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Goel Ratzon, 60 accused of living with 23 wives
  • Ratzon allegedly controlled women in a cult-like structure
  • Indictment says authorities knew of his cult for 10 years

RELATED TOPICS

Jerusalem (CNN) -- An Israeli man accused of having 23 wives and fathering 59 children was charged Sunday in a Tel Aviv court with multiple counts of sexual assault, rape, sodomy and enslavement.
Goel Ratzon, 60, was arrested last month.
Authorities charge that he lived in a compound with the 23 wives, having convinced them that he was omnipotent.
All the wives tattooed Ratzon's name and picture on their arms and the children's names are all derivatives of his name, according to the court papers.
Ratzon married his first wife in 1972, added a second wife in the early 1980s, and from 1991 added another 21 wives, according to the indictment.
He persuaded the women that he had the power to heal and curse, through which he gained "complete control of their lives, desires, thoughts, emotions and actions," the court papers say.
Ratzon spoke in court for first time last week, saying he was innocent, that everything was done with consent, and that any women who wished to leave could do so, Israeli media reported.
The indictment charges that the defendant "captured the women in a 'pseudo-family' structure that revolved around the worship of his image, making the birth of his children a supreme goal that the women must aspire to, and all this was to glorify him while serving and fulfilling all his needs."
Ratzon demanded that his wives and children completely obey all of his orders and has stringent rules and had a penalty system if they disobeyed him, the indictment alleges.
He also "abused his wives by trampling their self-worth and cut them off from any outside social contact including their families, and by this enslaved them to him and his desires," the court papers say.
The indictment includes allegations of rape and sodomy of two of his daughters, sexual assault of another daughter, and rape, assault and sodomy of four other girls.
Beyond the mental and physical control Ratzon had over his wives, he effectively controlled all of their finances, the indictment says. The women deposited major chunks of their social security payments and salaries into the family's account, paid for all of his living expenses and bought him all his property and anything he demanded, authorities charge.
Ratzon's cult has been known to the authorities for about 10 years, they said, but it was only about six months ago they succeeded in convincing one of the women to file a complaint. That brought about his arrest last month.

so instead of having one wife tell him to take out the trash, he had to hear it 23 times?

while this is terrible, its not something horrible in terms of the world. go to africa and you see plenty of this, other middle eastern countries, polygamy is completely legal.

how about in the US maybe 6 months back that girl was found in the back shed of someone's house who was kidnapped over 18 years previously.

these things are terrible, no doubt, but specifically posting about an israeli one is just looking for an argument unrelated to the main topic

Bullshit. When dealing with news stories the WHO and WHERE are integral parts of the story.

That is true - given the OP way of posting, it was not pure of heart.

The truth is the Op could care less how many wives and children this man had.
The OP could actually care less if this mman abused his wives or children.

All the OP cares about is the fact that this man is Israeli.....

If this man was Muslim or Palestinian the Op would not haev even bothered to post...

Well of course not. The media would not have bothered to inform us or the OP of it.

Yes, because Palestinians own the media

no, but they have some of the strictest media laws in the world.

right now they are about to prosecute one of their own for exposing corruption within the fatah hawks.

the PNA is trying to smear Shabaneh, accusing of him of collaborating with israel, selling land to jews (capital offense), and even attempted murder.

but you wont see BBC, CNN, the Guardian, or even Fox News pick this up.

why?

because if it doesnt follow the pallywood script, it doesnt get printed.

allah ackbar.

Your weak man. Instead of offering a word of disapproval to the Israeli cult leader, you go straight to vilifying Muslims/Palestinians. Weak.

what's so weak about it?

there is nothing unique about this. israel is far more progressive than the USA as far as women's rights is concerned.

you have any idea how many cult leaders the USA has had? the mormons? the christian fundies? selected muslim communities?

unacceptable.

the OP thread was clearly a bait/trolling because its mostly about israel than the victims.

but while this is condemned in israel and will be prosecuted, less than 100 miles away - it is celebrated, sanctioned, and defended viciously by the "liberal" muslims and their progressive enablers.

first thing israel did when it took over the west bank was grant sexual freedoms and enabled persecuted palestinians access into israel hospitals, and even protection if needed.

u have no idea how many pregnant palestinians come into hospitals in jerusalem, wishing to commit suicide because their family will kill them for having a child outside of marriage, or to a rivaling religious/tribal clan.

over 9,000 killed a year in pakistan alone in honor-related incidents, mostly families outraged that their daughters dare to date or have sex with an outsider.

in gaza, it is not uncommon to wealthy palestinians have 4 wives, some as young as 14, and 11+ children.

nizar rayan, a hamas terrorist killed by the IDF during the gaza war, was victimized and even registered as a civilian by amnesty international because he was not "involved in hostilities."

slightly off-topic, but all im saying is the lack of counter-balance is offensive.

in reality, israel superior to all its western critics in regards to cult-based behaviors and rapes.

the OP should be ashamed of himself for promoting such garbage.

This was was never intended to be an Arab/Palestinian/Israeli discussion, but you and others made it out to be. If you want to say Israel is better than everyone in regards to this cult issue then fine, I wont argue because I don't know. But at the time you never mentioned one negative thing about this guy and deflected the conversation to others. That is weak. If you don't have anything bad to say about this guy and his actions then you should be ashamed of yourself.

phrase what? the headline and article are straight frm CNN. 99% of every PN thread is phrased worse than this. and there's nothing wrong with this one.

then why include the word "Israeli" in the headline? if the victims are the focus here, what should it matter where is he from?
and i'm not attacking anyone. i just wanted to point out the problematic headline caused this discussion to derail.

If the headline didn't include the nationality of this man the first question that would come to my mind is "where did this happen and who did it ?". There is nothing wrong with the headline; in fact without mentioning the nationality of the man the headline would be obscure.

Israeli cult leader charged with enslavement, rape

That is the direct title from CNN. The headline is not problematic at all. If the article title said "Man of Jewish descent did...etc" then that would be problematic. Ever heard of the 5 W's?
