The "trickery" involving family members should NOT be considered "torture" unless there is physical abuse against the prisoners or any members of their family.
How is it unreasonable to bring in his family members for questioning?!
"Trickery," such as letting the family members cross paths in the waiting rooms, is perfectly acceptable. Most legal interrogations involve some form of trickery or incentive -- including the manipulation of individual perceptions and implied repercussions, etc.
That said, any accusations of physical abuse, such as beatings, should be thoroughly investigated, and any perpetrators should be punished accordingly.
What about dressing them up as prisoners or putting them in handcuffs? All this is meant to force a confession out of the accused.
IMHO, it's psychological torture because you feel the guilt of putting your family behind bars and that can force you to do or say things you never intended.
Isn't that the point?
Like I said, most
legal interrogations involve some form of psychological gaming -- ie. confusing the subject, false implications, perception manipulation, etc.
ie.
"If you don't tell us where the defensive positions are, all of your friends might die when we're forced to shoot and bomb the entire village. I don't want that to happen, so please tell me where the insurgents are hiding, and you and I can have them captured instead of killed..."
or
"If you don't cooperate, we'll let all the other prisoners see you receive extra food, extra meals, more privileges, etc... and we both know what they'll be thinking then..."
or
/slowly tear up a photo of his wife... then a photo of the kids... throw the pieces on the floor... walk away saying "Get used to missing them..."
You get the point... arresting, questioning, and then releasing the parents may, or may not, have the same type of effects. It also still seems reasonable for investigative purposes. Why can't they be arrested and questioned as accomplices or fellow suspects?
