Israel secured supplies of ammunition from the Pentagon last month without the approval of the White House or the State Department, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

Since officials there were caught off guard as they tried to restrain Israel's campaign in Gaza, the administration of President Barack Obama has tightened controls on arms shipments to Israel, the newspaper said, quoting U.S. and Israeli officials.

thieves!! how did they gain access or who on the inside approved it?!

On July 20, Israel's defense ministry asked the U.S. military for a range of munitions, including 120-mm mortar shells and 40-mm illuminating rounds, which were already kept stored at a pre-positioned weapons stockpile in Israel.

The request was approved through military channels three days later but not made public. Under the terms of the deal, the Israelis used U.S. financing to pay for $3 million in tank rounds. No presidential approval or signoff by the secretary of state was required or sought, according to officials.

404 theft not found.

"But the case illustrated that the White House and the State Department had little influence over the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the paper said, quoting officials from both countries."

Shouldn't that be this case illustrates that the White House and state dept has little influence over the pentagon since they supplied the arms to Israel?

This is simply not right.

There was a procedure set in place that would allow Israel to obtain stocks from US stocks that are prepositioned in Israel. Israel used this proceedure. White House is unhappy and feigns upset about their own policies because they don't like the outcome. White House changes the procedure and now all restock requests go through the White House.

bold the statement right before it:

"Under the terms of the deal, the Israelis used U.S. financing to pay for $3 million in tank rounds."

they pay for our weapons with our own tax money. and they take it without approval.
theft. plain and simple. and the American taxpayers are the victims ( oh, and innocent brown Palestinians).

wonder if India could just walk into our munitions depot and borrow a few rounds without asking?

No where does it say US financing = US tax dollars. Also nowhere does it say they took it without approval. I think the Israeli actions in Gaza are ultimately counter productive by you have dispensed with any shred of intellectual honesty on this matter.

Innocent brown Palestinians would be better off if they stopped voting for violent douche bags. Both sides are at fault in the conflict and have to make changes if they ever want to have "peace".

Innocent brown Israelis would be better off if they stopped voting for land grabbing douche bags.

Woohoo! Next time I go to the car dealer, I'm going to ask for dealer financing. That way, they pay for the car for me!

Selling weapons (covertly or not) always seems to spell trouble in many ways. On 9/11 our support for Israel (and Saudi Arabia) brought the war home. Does anyone think that that can't happen again? Be wary of who you lie with. Is a two year old Palestinian girl any less innocent than a World Trade Center occupant on 9/11? Why don't we fight harder for her, or make it harder to hurt her?

Israel was born from revenge. Before 1948 The Kingdoms of Israel and Judah had been there only up to 2500 years ago. Jews were given a historic right of return. And since people love having their land taken away, a revenge cycle began. I'm not surprised the U.S. is in bed with them since we were born partly on some "manifest-destiny" BS.

Israel and Palestine will never recognize each other because that would mean giving up land permanently. It is a game of "who is the most powerful? (edit: and who's got more powerful friends)" and always was and always will be. Such it is to be human.

I've heard it said that revenge is an admission of pain. Man, do humans like to express their pain, and react to it. What if we didn't?

I've also heard that pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. Just think how much we would advance if we could separate the two. Sadly some seem to get very attached to the suffering.

Wars aren't won anymore, they just drag on and on even after victory is declared. Newton was a scientist, but if he was into geo-politics his famous axiom would read, "For every action there is a larger and opposite reaction. It's hard to see how war won't ratchet-up forever.

/end I-P/war rant

Did you people even bother to read the original story?

Israel had permission from the military to take the stocks.

The arrangement of doing so was already approved and has been happening for years.

White House didn't like the optics and they changed the proceedure.

To call this theft or covert weapons dealing is just completely dishonest.

I haven't even looked at the political aspect of things today, kind of amused me the one I saw was bitching about bombing the ISIS guys with out Congressional approval.

Get more lame, I mean seriously.

They should be carpet bombing there atm IMHO.

if you read between the lines you'll see that this is being propogandized with our media.......

to turn public support AGAINST Israel...

Israel is scrambling right now, they kinda got slapped trying to go into Gaza..... got majorly slapped in the public opinion domain....

now we'll see the the right wing of US politics turn against Israel.... Jews in USA vote D... religiously.

R will win the next election, and further push Israel out of our politics...

the only reason at all we are bombing ISIS right now is because of the Jewish lobby...

as soon as R is in power, expect to see us lay off on ISIS and it will bounce back even more gruesome than before....

and then......... we'll see Israel lose major power, maybe even a coup

So the thread title should really be "Regular weapon's shipments from the US to Israel continue, and someone noticed".

In a related story, Israel also purchased food, cars, and machinery without White House approval.
