The sad part about all this is she was as good as dead once she rescued that child!! Maybe not right away but they(Islamic militants) would have hunted her down. This is just my opinion.
Anybody who says -- offer proof is just goofy in the head.
That`s like asking somebody to prove there is a God or to disprove there is a God.

We all have our opinions -- live with it!!

JERUSALEM – Israel granted honorary citizenship Monday to an Indian woman who braved gunfire to save an Israeli boy from the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that killed both of his parents.

Sandra Samuel rescued 2-year-old Moshe Holtzberg from a Jewish center targeted by Islamic militants. She found him by his parents' bodies and rushed him to safety.

Samuel has been caring for him in Israel since then. He is in the custody of his extended family.

Spokeswoman Sabine Haddad said Interior Minister Eli Yishai personally presented the certificate in recognition of Samuel's bravery. She was also granted permanent residency status.

At a news conference, Samuel showed her new Israeli identification card to reporters as she held Moshe in her arms.

"(Moshe) teaches me Hebrew, and if I don't pronounce it properly, he keeps on repeating it, that I say it properly. He is a teacher now for me," Samuel told Israeli Channel 2 TV.

She told Army Radio she is "happy and very honored."

Samuel, a widow, gave up her life in India and left her two sons to move to Israel.

In all, 166 people were killed in the Mumbai attacks.

Meh. Israel has double standards everywhere. Any news from there regardless positive or negative always has a twist on it.

What are you talking about? Do you think she threw a palestinian baby at the terrorists to distract them or something?

Or does my meter need calibrating?

Is this real citizenship or just the kind they give along with a photo-op? If it's just honorary then it means little. Also, how old were the sons she abandoned to move to Israel and take care of this child? If they were children themselves then that is just pathetic.

And have you stopped beating your wife? You accuse her of abandoning her children when you don't even know if her children were grown yet.

and fwiw, her children were adults at the time of the attacks.

 to the lady for her actions to save an innocent child. I don't care about the politics / photo op/ all that crap, the bottom line is she did something heroic and I hope she is rewarded for it.

Your title says citizenship whereas the article says honorary citizenship. I'm not sure where you're from but in America honorary is not the same as the real deal. Also, in America, permanent residency is equivalent to a permanent resident which is a far cry from actual citizenship. So, why don't you reply with the correct attitude and I promise not to insult you.

Are you dense or just retarded? I just told you what the terms mean in America and you decided to regurgitate what you already said. From an American point of view permanent residency is a step below citizenship. They do not complement each other. Once you are a citizen, permanent residency is automatically implied. There is no need to be granted such status. Is this different in IsraelAre you saying that a person can be a citizen of Israel but not allowed to reside or work legally in the country?

Other than the issue of leaving her adult or non adult children in India, I have no problem with Israel taking this action. If the woman in question is happy, why should any of us not be happy with Israel doing the right thing? Maybe it would have been better for her and her children to included in Israeli option, but still the scant details tell us little about the rest of the family.

Maybe the common denominator in Israel and India is the presence of terrorism, but the terrorist issues are quite different when comparing India and Israel.

Either way, granting her residency is a good thing, but I am curious as well. Is "permanent residency" in Israel the same as "citizenship", because in the USA it most certainly isn't. Residency says "you can stay here and you are allowed to work here, but that's it, you are still an outsider". Citizen grants you full rights of every other citizen, including the right to vote, which non-citizen residents do not get.

looking around the internet, It does seem the same difference as in the US

a permanent resident cant vote, etc, but can stay forever. (hence permanent) they are eligible to apply for citizenship after a certain point.

I do not see israel denying this woman citizenship ever if she applies later on

No matter how many times you post it with bolded text, permanent residency is not citizenship... Do you really not realize there is a difference?

Did they have to give her anything? Seriously, how lame. I bet if they gave her money, you'd say, why didn't they give her twice as much...

- wolf

I just don't get it. She saved the Israeli child so they gave her citizenship as a reward-- except it was some kind of honorary citizenship, and residency. What's the point? Why not just go all the way? Why hold back?

OK, so they didn't want to circumvent the waiting period

it is a bit odd they didnt go all the way, but offering her permanent residency is still good enough in my books for her since she literally put her life out on a limb.

maybe in israel, since there is a security issue, they never hand out full citizenship from the start?

I still dont see israel denying this woman full citizenship if she applies

Also, i dont see anyone else offering her a reward, not in india where they let the terrorist attack happen.

This is why Israel is loved so much by jews (and in this case jewish people's helpers) because Israel provides a safe haven for jews who ever feel threatened, and this is an example where one can feel safe and not be jewish.

I totally would not be surprised if she converts to Judaism later on in life

All i see here is a bunch of internet commando's that would have pissed their pants in the same situation and use politics as a means of deriding her heroics.

Israel may be like the US where it is next to impossible to get citizenship unless your family member is already a member. By offering her full citizenship it may open the door to people they do not want to let in. Hence, the permanent residency and honorary citizenship. A shrewd move on their part.
