The Copyright Alert System is a policy created by the Center for Copyright Information with backing from the RIAA and other copyright organizations along with the major internet service providers: AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner, and Verizon. The group monitors peer-to-peer file transfers, and sends out email notices when it detects you're downloading copyrighted material (via BitTorrent)

No asking for how to pirate.

As posted in another thread. The process isn't flawless because other people can and will get blamed for something they didn't do. (But according to some, apparently it's your fault anyway. Tell that to the grandparents with the botnets).

When I first heard of this, I wondered who they were targeting.

But then I remembered all the people I know who think that Frostwire = unlimited free music. And download coupon apps. And sometimes use AOL 🙁

This kills me:

You can file for an independent review process to get the alert removed, but it costs $35.

I bet this will be another huge money-maker for them. I know a ton of people who don't secure their wifi because they live in the sticks and don't really care, but you can get really screwed that way if you're not careful.

Who seeds anymore, anyway? Most of the people downloading shit are leechers. They take what the want and leave.

Courts in California has stated that it is not possible to prosecute a person based on an IP address alone. The prosecutors must also provide additional proofs to prove that the person committed the crime and not someone else using his internet connection.

The $35 fee is refunded if you win the appeal.

I'd be interested to learn the win/loss ratio though...

hm.. apprently some torrent sites (like a big one by the Bay) have adjusted and have an option for anonymous torrent downloads via their free VPN.

When did lifehacker become the goto place for information these days? That fleabitten place is little more than a blogspot advertising trap.

Someone sounds a bit bitter. I wonder why?

I wish we could add rep to people's post.

My ISP is not participating in this either.

JEDI lol you asked how to pirate what a noob.

#1 Try to buy stuff
#2 Pirating is not bad. Sometimes it's very helpful.
#3 If you don't have money, try to pirate less and buy more. You can do it!
#4 Support the stuff that you love. Trust me, it pays to support stuff you love.
