""David Rocci developed a public Web site that specifically catered to the underground piracy community," said Assistant Attorney General Michael Chertoff. "He attempted to profit by marketing circumvention devices to that community knowing they would be used to play pirated games." "

Rocci will face a prison sentence of up to five years and fines up to $500,000 at his sentencing on March 7, the government said.

DAMN! isn't that little too harsh on 22 year old guy?

You mean I'll be able to play it without dropping $2 on start and $1 after each race?

Oh, no - because modchips are only used by Evil Pirates, not legit homebrew coders / etc. If I want to play the latest beta build of QuakeII DC - yes, it's in progress - I think I should be able to ask for a DC that can play CDRs. Ditto for homebrew XBox. Homebrew PS2 never took off much. :p

Wow, that's pretty expensive, are you playing it at a Jillians type place? Over here at the local arcade it costs 50 cents a game and card.

Sorry - all prices Canadian. Shoulda mentioned. :p Cards also CDN$2. Campus Cove at UW.

A 3-minute race in Initial D doesn't seem like a fair deal to me when I can get a half-hour game of MvC2 (longer if I get challenged) or Guilty Gear XX (again, subject to challenge) for $0.50/$1.00 respectively.

Edit - BTW, nice nick, Imported. :D

The DOJ hasn't completed the 0wn4g3 yet. Within 72 hours they'll have the paperwork necessary to kill the server.

And as of the moment, preparations are underway to back up the database and bounce it to a server in the EU. :D

If I haven't seen the first 5, should I even bother with the 6th? Or will I be lost by the plot?

Also i can't see how the owner of that site would be stupid enough to sell mod chips through the site. And it doesn't seem likely that he would either, they had rules on the forums against requesting software, which I would think would be worse than selling illegal hardware.

Something stinks about this...

I don't remember him selling mod chips through the site. There are always ads, but they go to easybuy2000. the site is good, but there are others. i prefer nforce or vcdquality, b/c isonews only posts the official/first rips, not the subsequent internal or dupe or repack etc. and those are sometimes the better ones. but anyways, interesting to see if this is real or not.

iSONEWS.com hacked ... or busted ?
>> It seems like several news sites (United Press , CNET news.com (bottom), Yahoo! ...) started posting about iSONEWS's shutdown.

If you go directly to the IP , http://66.201.243.170 , you can see the iSONEWS server is still up and running.
The shutdown page is hosted on a server with IP 149.101.1.91 , which is indeed owned by DOJ (ip lookup)

Why could it be real ?
Someone people just sent us this url ... which indeed looks very real http://www.cybercrime.gov/rocciPlea.htm
Hack all those servers for just this joke isn't very realistic.

Why could it be fake ?
It could be a DNS hack on the iSONEWS side and a server hack on DOJ's server.
No announcement on http://www.usdoj.gov/opa/pr/2003/February/
Server is still up-and-running
iSONEWS denies shutdown in their irc chatroom (#isonews EFnet).
(the isonews-logo on the DOJ page doesn't look very realistic either)
The announcement is there now, #118.

I see we have a proud owner of anal addicts 1-5 :D :Q

Maybe its just me but I dont understand the point of these sites. Do they do anything besides tell you whats been "completed"? Even if they tell you the cdkey in the nfo, whoopie do because if someone downloads warez chances are the cd key is included.

That's exactly the point. They keep a list of "what's out there" so that the warezmonkeys know when to go leech.

The true collectors get the lists directly from the company.
Now, where's my master list of all US Sega Dreamcast games released? :D

- M4H

The point of ISO news is that courriers know when to hit the topsites for the latest releases. Also informs average joe about what has been released.

Can the DOJ(or any other government agency for that matter) seriously take domain names from you? They're not really "property" of any US organization, so it seems like they'd be stepping their bounds of seizing something they shouldn't(International and 4th amendment violations come to mind here).

"The domain and web site were surrendered to U.S. law enforcement pursuant to a federal prosecution and felony plea agreement for conspiracy to violate criminal copyright laws."

It wasn't taken, it was given to save the guy jail time and/or the fine.

It is (or was) a site where game and movie nfo's are posted after groups release them (nfo's are nothing more then text files with information on the release). No pirated software is shared or posted on the actually site, only the nfo's, the site is, and always has been very strict about that for obvious reasons. The site also has a large message board area, with everything from "scene" discussion, to game and hardware reviews/chat, to your basic general chit chat.
