and not pipes? for example:

a card with 16 pipes and speeds of 500/850...

wouldnt run a game as well as...

a card with 12 pipes and speeds of 650/1.15...

...right?

im just wondering because a 12-pipe card is cheaper then a 16-pipe card, usually, and i want to know if it really matters because i game like mad (unfortunately at other ppls house often times since my card is gay right now)...

16*500=8000 MPixel fill rate
12*650=7800 MPixel fill rate

So the 16 texture-unit one you mention would perform better assuming same core. You can't compare NVIDIA to ATI, and even reiterations of a core (e.g. NV43 as to NV40) complicate things. Both 'pipes' and clock speed matter for overall performance. I am not sure how memory would factor into it though. It would be much easier if you'd tell us the two exact cards you want to compare, because specs don't tell the whole story.

this would be assuming the cores are the same and the pipes are just different (example being 6800 vs 6 itself).

basically, the higher the product of the pipes and core clock is, the better the performance...?

if thats the easiest way to difinitively tell the performance of a card overall, then i love you xtknight -- in a friend kinda way, dont get excited now ;)

well the thing is, AMD 2.0GHz does not equal Intel 2.0GHz....

its about 2.6GHz in intel speed i believe, maybe a little more....

why is that? the same sorta thing between cards...is tha what you're trying to say?

so basically, the question here would be...

would a regular 6800GT (16p) 256 mb, (which is more expensive then the next card) perform better or worse (at stock speeds) then a 6800GS (12p) both from XFX (for example)?

yea, benchmarks -- i have been looking at them and its either the 6800GT or the 6800GS -- identical performance!

i believe ppl let the GSs go for less, so it looks like im gona try to push for one of those. if seen prices for about $175 USD for the GSs and for the GTs a little over $200 USD...

The GS is 200$, it performs equally to the 6800GT and it overclocks much better meaning that when you overclock both to their max limit, chances are, the GS will perform better after that.

So, more pipelines is not always the best.

OT: A lot more. An AMD64 running at 2.0GHz is roughly equal to a Intel 3.2GHz processor.

400 * 16 / 12 = 533.3

Most 6800gt can OC to ultra speeds (400mhz), and a 12 pipe 6800gs will have to be clocked at about 533mhz to match that. If the two card were for the same price, I'd chose the 6800gt, but since the 6800gs is similar and cheaper, it offers more bang for the buck.

i've had both a 6800gt agp (410/1100) and now a 6800gs PCIe (520/1180) from my personal experience i really can't tell the difference in performance, except that my 6800gs benchmarks higher than my 6800gt did. at 435/1135 i scored 6000 on 3Dmark 05, i scored 6480 with my GS @540/1240(yes i know it's a synthetic benchmark, but still a benchmark), i did some farcry benmarks, mainly the "ubisoft Volcano" time demo and the GS was slighty faster. i love to see a review that compares a OC'd 6800gt @400/1100 against a factory OC'd 6800gs @490/1100 to see how the two cards really compare, but i can't find one.

im sure the GS will beat it out....the core IS more refined anyway, and the GS is a better overclocker which is a plus.

meh, 2.0 amd equal to like 3.4 intel
