Isn't it legal to take others' trash?

They're having a pickup this monday for computer waste apparently and I was told that it was 'illegal' to take those computers because it's considered WM's property? wtf...? Is this true?
 
If you are really worried about WM doing something, just ask the original owner of the computer waste if you can take it.
 
If they paid for the pickup, then it could probably be considered stealing. They can sell the computer waste to reclamation companies for a profit.
 
call your local police department and ask what the laws are, as I understand it once an item has been discarded as trash it is open game.

WM can make no claims on property that is not theirs. Until it is in the back of one of their trucks they can't do anything.
 
If you are going onto Walmart property to take the items, yes it is stealing. Once it leaves private property, it's fair game.

..if they recycle it they expect to recover the gold/silver. So if they go thru the trouble to collect it the recycler wants it ALL.
 
My reading of this issue in the past is that once it's on the curb, it's fair game.

The exception is if a dumpster is in an enclosed area with a no trespassing sign.

IANAL and don't for a second treat this as legal advice.
 
It's a stupid law, but can be enforced if anyone would bother filing it. If WM is paid by the city, they probably won't care. But what if they throw it away and decide they want to keep it. They, legally, can go back and get it because it is theirs.

Similar issue. A truck driving down the road loses a rug that was in the back of it. It is a $3000 rug and the truck is long gone. If you take the rug and you weren't the one that lost it, you are stealing from the D.O.T.

In the FW dumpster diving thread, the final word was if it it is in the dumpster, its fair game. If it is next to the dumpster, then you are stealing items from their property. If the dumpster is gated or locked in someway, then it is off limits.
