Isn't all this flak we're giving Iran making them MORE likely to want nukes...

Ok, so Iran has this nuclear program which pisses us off for some reason. Apparently only our friends can have nuclear weapons.....or nuclear power. Iran has this program, they've let inspectors go through it, there's a good amount of transparency on their part, and it looks like it's just for energy purposes (If I recall correctly the amount they have/quality of it wouldn't be suitable for a bomb anyway). Now the U.S. gov't is giving warnings, threats, etc.......so if you're Iran, why WOULDN'T you make a bomb at this point. If we're going to start threatening them as if they already have one or are going to make one, why not actually make one. Plus since we're threatening them, making a bomb would be a good way to defend yourself....It'd be like if you were making a bow and arrow for hunting purposes...and I came along with another bow and arrow, pointed it at you and told you to stop making it, or else....why wouldn't you finish it, get up, and point yours right back at me?

Iran has wanted nukes for a while to intimidate/extort their Arab neighbors, not just for protection from the US.

Iran could most likely build a basic uranium bomb in a year or two if left to their own devices. The problem is that I doubt the US/EU are going to wait that long for the issue to be resolved. The Europeans have an interest in this considering their increasingly turbulent interactions with Islamic radicals and the fact that a good chunk of Europe is within range of Iran's ballistic missiles.

If China invaded Mexico...would the US ramp up its military power or reduce it?

Why do we expect Iran to do anything different then what we would do?

Foster a low grade civil war/uprising to slowly but surely wear the enemy down.

The big thing that has intimidated Iran is our invading Iraq. That made us into a rogue nation. At this point, it should be painfully obvious that Iran is working on a nuclear weapon and its civilian program is only a finge benefit. I don't think Iran should be allowed to have nukes since they are a theocratic state that has said that it want's to destroy israel and proliferate nuclear arms.

Well, Duh!

Slap any nuclear capable country onto the "Axis of EEevil" List, invade two of their neighbors, make lots of threatening noises and unproveable accusations, they'll want nukes in a hurry...

The Bushistas have only strengthened the hand of Iran's own hard-liners, which was apparently their intention in the first place. Neocon policy needs "Enemies" in order to sell to the public. If none are available, then they'll be created, simple as that... All part of the Lies in pursuit of the greater good strategy, if you happen to believe in that sort of claptrap...

________

I am so glad that you are not in charge of our international policies... Are you saying its not in our best interest to try to prevent foreign countries such as Iran from attaining nuclear arms? Nukes for everybody? Who's next on your list, Cuba? JFK was wrong? Our nation's job is to look out for our national interests, first and foremost, and allowing Iran to arm up is definitely not in our best interests, or in the interests of Israel, Turkey, and most of Western Europe.

by the way captain knowledge, if you think iran only wants to pursue enrichment for power reasons, remember last month their buddy, russia, offered a peaceful solution: allow the russians to enrich their material and then deliver it to the iranians for power consumption... iran flatly refused the offer.

Why should Iran accept that offer?

Under all rules they are allowed to enrich their own uranium.

Why should they be different from other nations? Why would any country accept such a deal? It is a deal the West knows Iran would never take. Just something to feed the media to make Iran appear evil. The media and the people don't realize Iran has a right to enrich their own uranium.

Off topic, but Aimster, your quote scares me:

If Israel gave up their weapons they would not exist, if the Arabs gave up their weapons they would still exist.

its not hard to make a country like iran appear evil. you have the harder job of presenting iran as benign, which it is not.

Why does it scare you?

How is Iran different? Don't you understand how Iran is different from other nations?
Need I explain it to you?
