From CNN regarding a recent ISIS attack against an Iraqi police station. They blew up the station and I wondered how they did it. I read the article and saw this quote.

"ISIS fighters in Ramadi dug a tunnel underneath the army headquarters and detonated hundreds of homemade bombs"

There you have it. That's pretty damn smart. These guys are fighting for a cause and they have passion. They won't be easy to defeat.

I think they will be a pain in the ass for a good long while. They have a strong moral and religious cause to fight for. I don't agree with their thinking, but I understand their passion in a way. Its what freed America and why patriotic soldiers fight so well. Its not about the idea itself, but that they have an idea to fight for, a religious idea. It is more powerful that national pride. I don't know, I think they are going to be tough.

Dude, that goes back to the Middle Ages. Even before humanity had explosives, in the ancient world, sappers dug tunnels and piled up brush, then burned it to undermine the foundation above. But yes, they will be tough to defeat.

tunnel bombs go back to world war 1. hardly a new innovation.

isis is just a bunch of farmers and mechanics with ak-47s and rpgs and technicals rolling across the desert, raping and pillaging. they are bigger trolls than north korea with these executions. i bet they launch a guy out of a cannon or have an elephant eat one or something... they spend all day thinking of ways to kill people all in an effort to troll the US into sending troops

ISIS is merely a collection of misfits and outcasts being coordinated by a small and well trained group of former Iraqi commanders. It's a movement that is destined to fail since the fight itself is what motivates them. Once the aura of invincibility is eroded, which appears to be happening right now, they will implode from within and disband.

I think you are jihadi.

Cut off their roads / means of travel, and see how "strong" they really are.

ISIS is a militia that can be squashed like an insect. We merely choose not to do this.

They have an apocalyptic vision that is rule based. Their actions are designed to evoke their predictions. We are stupid and easily manipulated into complying with their wishes. Their vision would show as threadbare if we didn't and their power of recruitment would come to an end as would their movement. They live in an altered reality, like conservative brain defectives, catastrophizing end times over Obamacare, wacked completely out of their minds. We know where the war against Obamacare is going to end and it's not death panels on every street corner.

Been happening since Roman times, probably earlier than that even. Although until gunpowder was invented, they would light a huge fire in the tunnel right under the defensive walls which would eventually cause the section to collapse as the supporting timber burned and weakened.

Centuries ago the Chinese (or Japanese, can't recall) had methods to detect tunnel mining near important and protected places.

This part I agree with.
