You are going to find ISDN much slower and probably more expensive than DSL. Monthly costs and installation fees depend on your area/telco.

In my area, it is $65/month for the line - unlimited hours as opposed to only 200 in the past. Most ISP's here will charge you $45/month for your account and have limits of 100-200 hours depending on ISP. Installation is $200 and the ISDN routers are $100+ to purchase and your line speed is 128Kbps. Compare that to DSL for $39/month, 640Kbps.

What are you using it for. Is DSL available in your area?

*edit, cause I have to go*

If you are using it for home use and DSL is available in your area, go for the DSL. It will be faster (ISDN tops out at 128k), and nearly as reliable.

ISDN, being a business class service, will have expensive monthly fees and the installation costs will be high. You will also need an account at an ISP that supports ISDN connections. (even more $$$)

ISDN is usually a last resort for residential users.

when i first inquired about high speed internet access i thought about isdn. they charged an arm and a leg, but then as DSL was getting popular, they (Verizon) pushed DSL over isdn.

In the networking area, companies usually include ISDN backup connections to their routers incase the primary serial or tokenring would go down. The ISDN are only suppose to stay up for a short period of time because of the costs associated with them.

I was seriously considering ISDN for a while, it's supposedly more reliable than DSL, and DSL wasn't available in my area anyway. The cost was reasonable too, something like $45/month, but it was also only 128k up/128k down

Pitiful compared to the near-T3 speeds I get with my cable connection.

I HATE ISDN!!! My father has an ISDN line and it is nothing but problems. He has gone through 3 USR Courier I.modems. You spend hours on the phone with tech support trying to get it working right. It costs and arm and a leg. And worst of all, his speeds are no faster than mine (I use a 56k modem). ISDN is suck!

Maybe I can be of some help...I exhausted all my broadband options since DSL, cable, and wireless are unavailable to me. So I'm moving from this place in May :D

Through my telco (Qwest), I was quoted for $67/month for the leased ISDN line and then ISP charges anywhere from $30-45/month depending on who you go through.

The leased line option can only be through your telco and they will bend you over with it. There's literally no way of getting that price down since its a leased line. Also, if you are too far from the CO, you need repeaters that add an additional monthly cost. So at minimum, I would be paying about $97/month for a 128k connection. T

The only advantage I really saw was that the latency is much better than 56k...so you can frag away in games as an LPB, but your download speeds are pitiful.

ISDN = It Still Does Nothing

Hope that helps more than BustaRhyme's response ;)

Yeah yeah, I was exaggerating. ;) It actually hovers right around the speed of a T1, but can be about twice that speed if I get lucky. When you're up around T1 speeds, I don't think it really matters anyway, the difference isn't very noticeable.
