ISDN internal modems

Is there a benefit to having an external ISDN modem compared to an internal modem? There is a huge price difference, is the price difference worth the performance etc? 😕

Well the only difference I can think of would be the internal Modem would have it's own High speed serial port. (128kbs) If you use an external you either have to buy a serial card or live with a slightly slower transfer rate. ISDN is 128 serial ports are 112. Whether or not it makes a difference I don't know I've been using my 128K ISDN on a 112 standard serial port for years.

I will say that it is nice having an external one so you know if you're connected on both channels. Sometimes the ISP will dump a channel on you and I'm not sure how you would know with an internal one.

Serial ports are stuck basically at 115200, but with ISDN, you can get 128000. Do the math, a basic serial port (with a 16550 UART) cannot handle the extra data coming down the pipe. This isn't a major problem, but if you want to use all the bandwidth, you will need a higher speed serial port to handle this (16650 UART).

If you get an internal ISDN modem, this is all solved, so its all good. With Win98, the default DUN (dialup networking) component supports the multilink, so you'll be set!

Did you know (at least a few years ago) that in California and New York that ISDN wasn't 128k? It was 112k (56kx2)! Its not a well known thing, but it was true. I had ISDN at 112k, it was fast, but DSL is 10x better now.

I can get a Zoltrix modem for very cheap. Should I go for it or did any body here have a bad experience with one?
