IS7-E Ordered - Got a Overclock Question

Hi Everyone!

Just ordered an Abit IS7-E from Newegg. I have a question about setting it up. I am going to use a 2.5A GHz P4 (at 100 MHz FSB) and 2 sticks of Corsair ValueSelect PC 3200 DDR RAM. I will eventually upgrade my CPU when the prices fall.

I plan on overclocking and my question is this -

1. Will the MB detect and run the RAM at 200 MHz automatically? I need to know this because I plan on overclocking the CPU for all it is worth. If this is the case then I will need to play with the CPU:RAM ratio setting.

2. If the board does not automatically detect and set the RAM speed, should I set it at 166 MHz and then overclock the CPU (leaving the ratio at 1:1) and rely on the headroom available on the memory?

3. Is it possible to set the RAM speed manually or does it automatically default to the processor speed. In this case, would I set the CPU:RAM ratio to 1:1 and overclock the CPU without worrying about the RAM?

I guess I am a little confused after reading the IS7 thread. Most people have a B or C processor and are having to slow down the FSB of their RAM (or they are using high end performance RAM). I am new at the overclocking game. I would appreciate your input.

Thanks.

well...

1. your ram will be detected at 100 mhz

it'll run 25 x 100.

2. if you set it to 166... it'll be 25 x 166 = 4150 which won't be possible.

3. yes, it is possible to set the ram speed manually...

with pc3200, you're fine up to 200 mhz. you can run 1:1 up to 200 mhz.... but i doubt you'll even get close cuz of your chip.

your memory will most likely be detected to run 266mhz on a 100fsb (nbs400 3:4 ratio)
or 333mhz if you happen to make it to 133fsb (nbs533 4:5 ratio)

of course you can play with the settings yourself if you like too.

🙂

It is a brand new chip. Picked it up in December 2003 right before Christmas. It was at a price that I couldn't pass up.

I am going to set 3 GHz as my goal. Thanks!

id sugest setting it to nbs400 with a 3:4 mem ratio and 2.8v vdimm.
make sure the agp/pci is "fixed" to 66/33, and start working way up the fsb.

gluck 🙂
