I'm 20 years old & still going to college full-time, but the part-time "job" I have is the first step in my career.

33, very much a career.

Biggest part was building a name for myself as a straight shooter with business savvy. So now I have a good reputation in town.

Started off initially as a job is a job as a helpdesk member. After making good connections and working hard, i moved up several times. Now i'm in the job is a career side as the IS guy for a growing department and as the only guy i'm getting project managing/implementation, server build/maintainance, desktop, and department specific engineering experience. If nothing else, this is one great resume stuffer for future considerations. I'm 24, almost 2 years out of college.

It pays off when your boss makes comments like, "I'm not sure if I've said this to you yet, but I really appreciate the work you do around here."

Maybe that's a payoff if you have self-esteem problems, but it's not going to put your kids through college.
