How old are you? And do you think that where you work now is more like something to do during the day to get money, or is it something that you really care about and want to make your life's work.

I am 23, graduated from college last year, and my job is just something I do to get money. I couldnt imagine having to work here for like a year or more. I am still looking for something that's more in my area of interest that could be something that I am really into.

It could be a career for some....in fact it is for some that work here. For me, it is just a job for the time being.

Edit: whoops, 26 years old.

47 (almost 48)
My job is (presently) networking and repairing computers
My career is Air Force and I retire in 1.5 years
Can I quit working when I retire? Not for about 6 years after retirement.

Treat every job you have as a career, and it can take you anywhere. I currently am working a crappy retail job but it actually is the best job I've ever had. If you treat every job as your career, it'll ensure you're performing the best that you possibly can.

It pays off when your boss makes comments like, "I'm not sure if I've said this to you yet, but I really appreciate the work you do around here."

27 and I don't really know. I have been working for the same company for almost 6 years and have had 5 different positions and just finished my last interview for hopefully my 6th. I don't look at what I do as a career just because I don't want to settle for what is offered.

Yea, and I come here, work long hours on difficult problems and my managers seem to appreciate it. But the thing is that I just dont find it interesting. That's why I just think of it as a temporary thing to fill the time and get some experience.

I've had jobs where if I treated at as a career and did an outstanding job, it really could have led somewhere. Hell, if I had stuck with it, I might have been the head janitor by now.

My current job is a career(software development). All my previous jobs were just jobs. While some weren't too bad and were actually fun sometimes, none were something I wanted to stay in.

My current job is just a job... I'm just using it to gain experience. It really isn't that bad at all though :)

I'm 23 and still deciding if my current employment is just a job or if it is in fact the begining of a career.

I once inspired to have the title of Chief Information Officer for some medium to large scale organization and my current position could certainly lead me in that direction if I still choose to take that path. However, now that I am in the IT field I'm not so certain I want to remain here.

My current "job" is where I work now. My "career" is the experience & reputation I've gained in my field that will hopefully let me keep my job or move on to better ones.

edit: 35

my job is over, maybe. heh. fcked up pretty big time over the weekend and I think I might get fired.

but let's say I don't get fired... I consider it more of a job than a career. I don't plan on staying in IT forever. I'm just killing time, trying to figure out what I really want to do with the rest of my life.

but I've decided that if I get fired, I'm going to grad school to get my PhD in English Lit. admission deadline is July 1st, so at least I have some time to take the GRE's. heh.
