i've noticed a lot of cases nowadays have a direct air intake for the bottom PSU. problem is, if you have carpet and no real good way to raise the case, these things are basically useless.

so i'm wondering what % of people sit their computers directly on carpet?

myself, i've got carpet and not much clearance under the desk. i'd gain a few more inches if i remove the junk drawer but then where would i put all that crap?

My computer sits directly on the carpet, but my PSU is on top. I'm using a Thermaltake Armor A30.

Nope. My power supply is bottom mounted....I modded my desk to hide my water cooled HAF 932 :D

HAF&

Had to do a power button mod tho as the top clearance is about a 1/4" due to the design of the HAF 932. Got good airflow out of upper 120mm fans tho :D

Old photo as I'm using a VIZIO 32" LED TV for my monitor now! Works great without any tweaking :D

To ElFenix, thank you. Just got a new case and didn't even think about this.

HAF 932 with bottom-mounted PSU and it sits on the carpet. Because of that, I installed the wheels instead of the feet. That gives me a nice space for airflow under the case.

My primary system sits on top of four ceramic Sake shot glasses. They are tall enough to raise the system off the carpet but not so tall as to be noticeable. I'm not sure why I did this, but I may have been drinking when I came up with this solution.

Stumbled onto this as I keep surfing the forums between tweaking my new Sandy and Z68.

This relates to a post I made -- maybe yesterday -- here:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2178535

Instead of the dissertation on cases, go to the end paragraphs marked "EDIT:"

I may have forgot that a high-end HAF full-tower model MAY have casters . .. [hold on a minute . . ] . . . yeah, checked at the Egg for the pictures of "box contents." Those are the 1" casters.

But that's why I can't answer the poll-question so easily. "Yes -- it's 'on the carpet' . . " "No -- I don't have problems with airflow, because it's 2" 'off' the carpet." So except for the smaller size and lower price, I have the advantages of the 932 with the 922, and for about $10 ($15 if I'd had to purchase tools . . ) . . . heh-heh . . . "My wheels bigger'n yours . . . "

Yes . . . water-cooled. but air is the only way to move heat from the water-cooling system. Maybe the pictures don't show ventilation holes in the desk . . . You tell me . . . . I wouldn't know . . .

The whole back of the compartment is open as seen in the first photo. It makes little to no diff (1-2*C) during normal use if the door is open or closed but it does have about a 1/4" gap all the way around it when shut. With the front and side 230mm's as intake and the rear 120mm and 2 upper 120mm's mounting my radiator(s) as exhaust it seems to be effecient. Hot air rises so it pretty much goes up and out the back! The temperature in the compartment pretty much stays at the ambient temperature of the room. Of course if I'm doing some hard core stress testing with intel burn test or prime I do leave the door open.

Heh, with the Lian Li V1020 that I just picked up, I'm debating between leaving it on the floor on casters, or swapping the casters out for case feet and putting it on the desk (where my FT01 currently is).

on carpet but I've got a cosmos case so the feet or whatever you call em elevates it enough.

You know you can mount the PSU on the bottom in either orientation. I chose to mount mine fan pointing up, so it would take air from the inside of the case rather than pull it through the bottom of the case.

^just don't drop any screws in it, that could make for a very bad day.

I thought about mounting mine that way. But figured hot air rises, gravity makes things fall, and if I somehow had a water leak it may go inside and damage the power supply. Besides I think it would defeat the whole purpose of bottom mounting the power supply as air in the bottom out the back pretty much adds very little to no xtra heat into the case. Well at least that's the theory behind it anyways. I guess it's possible depending on the load some heat may still enter the rig but not as much as if the fan was on the top anyways.

Yep...and that's one of the big reasons I have my PSU mounted with the fan down.

I never have my case on the floor because that is just asking for dust to be pulled into it. There are so many ways to get a case at least 1 ft off the floor . You could get two concrete blocks and paint them to match the case color and set the case on those, or get a wooden box. Even a strong cardboard box will work.

Another issue is vacuum cleaners , I knew a lady that had a hard drive fail about every 3 months, we couldn't figure it out and thought it was just bad luck. One day I was at her house while she was cleaning. She was vacuuming and pushing the vacuum around the pc and constantly bumping it, while the pc was running. I asked her if that was normal for her and she didn't understand that hard drives spin inside and bumping the case like that could cause early failure. She vacuumed twice a week so that was twice a week, 8 times a month that poor case was hit on three sides while running.

Antec 900 and Apevia chassis both sitting on 2x4 blocks to keep them off the floor. Keeps some of the dust out. The apevia has bottom front intake which is the main reason it's up off the floor.
