mine is pretty quiet

i have an xp1700+ overclocked to 2.2ghz
all the fans (including the one in the powersupply) have been replaced with low rpm panaflo L1A fans which are near silent

the harddrive is the loudest component, but its still near silent (its a seagate sata know for being quiet)

My 350watt Enermax power supply is the loudest part in my system, except when it gets hot then the ThermalTake fan(originally on a Volcano 7 hs) gets very loud. During the summer I put a case fan on the side of my case and that helped to cut the noise from the TT fan(lowered case temps by 10c).

Not real quiet but plenty good on the ears. If i put a lil more money into it, it'd be silent.

I recorded the noise made by my computer w/ an mp3 player microphone thing... But so you have some reference, I also took a couple of pictures, to show you how far away the mp3 player is, and how it's oriented. Note that the microphone hole is on the side of the player nearest the tower. Note that I thought the sound files were FUBARED at first, because I couldn't hear anything. I then realized it's because my case is so loud. I turned off this computer, and listened to the sounds through some bose headphones on my other comp. You may need to use headphones to hear this... or have a very quiet computer of your own.

While the computer is off. Here is the sound of "silence" in the room. You can hear me bumping around a bit.

While the computer is on... THe sound is of me turning the computer on.

What do you think? Do you blame me for wanting $200 in a Zalman PS and Panaflo fans? How about a Sapphire 9800 Pro Ultimate?

You need a quiet case , An antec Sonata or a SLK3700-AMB

Already put over $300 into this one just 2 or 3 months ago.

Besides, I've heard the sonata has bad cooling, and isn't really that quiet. Wouldn't quieter fans be a good solution? I don't want a rheobus thing either, they're fugly.

antec sonata sucks, that's why I chose the SLK3700AMB. 1200mm fans on both ends. you got to see this case Nebor. it's cheap & very good. got it for under 100$ CDN.

took the 350watts psu out & used my 470 watts psu. it's a good case, take out antec PSU & add a cooling fan in fron of HD cage . you need a 120mm case fan 25 mm

I figure if I get the black SLK3700, which ONLY newegg has right now, for $75 + $18 shipping, it'll be $97. Plus 2 $15 Vantec Stealth 120mm fans. I can get those at Fry's to avoid the 'rape me' shipping charges.

Fileserver (P3 866 @ 1.1): Two thermally controlled Evercool 80mm case fans, 80mm Sunon medium-speed fan on Thermalright SK-7, lots of hard drives. Makes a soft hum.
Living room workstation (dual P3 1.26 @ 1.4): 2 high-speed 80mm Sunon case fans, 2 medium-speed 60mm Evercool fans on Thermalright SK-6's, Thermaltake crystal orb GPU cooler. Makes a slight whine.
Bedroom workstation (dual Opteron 1.4): 2 high-speed 80mm Sunon case fans, 2 medium-speed 70mm Delta fans on AMD retail heatsinks, no-name GPU cooler. Louder than my air conditioner, but not too terrible.

What's wrong with the Sonata? I've been using one for six months. I think when you've got it's fan hooked up to be thermal controlled the internal temps stay fairly high, but always below the safty margins, according to Intel's monitoring tools. (I've got a 2.4Ghz P4 though, who knows what would happen on a 3.2 or something).

It's the quiestest PC *I'VE* ever built, at any rate, and the case is nice to work in, and you don't have to make any great effort to be quiet (just pair it with a Seagate Barracuda drive).

My other PC is a PowerMac G4 DP 533, which is quieter yet, so I'm doing pretty good right now for loudness :D

Barely audible even 1 foot away. Best investment in my PC ever! It is important for me, since the machine is in the guest room and not too far away from the bed. This way I can keep it on even when guests are over, and always have access to the files on it (over the network).

Low voltage low-flo fans in power supply, CPU, video card, and case. Seagate Barracuda V with acoustic management turned on.

No problems with overheating whatsoever even with full-on gaming, since I'm using only a Radeon 9100 and a Celeron Tualatin 1.4 GHz.
