Is your computer a sucky MW2 host? Read inside.

I have a decent setup and I'm a terrible host. Same for my friend. After doing some research, I found a bunch of ports that we needed to open. I was just the host of a ground war and it ran pretty well. Normally everyone would have red pings.

From http://forums.modernwarfare247.com/index.php?/topic/12033-mw2-networking-101:

UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive (Game client traffic)
UDP 27015 to 27030 inclusive (Typically Matchmaking and HLTV)
TCP 27014 to 27050 inclusive (Steam downloads)
UDP 4380 Dedicated or Listen Servers
TCP 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port) Additional Ports for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer
UDP 1500
UDP 3005
UDP 3101
UDP 28960

Enjoy.

i would think your internet connection would be a bigger impact than your pc specs. even your post seems to indicate that networking ports need to be opened up instead of changes to your hardware or hardware settings.

I'm confused. That's exactly what I'm saying. The word in the game seems to be that it's your system specs, but instead it appears to be port settings.

REALLY? HOME INTERNET CONNECTIONS AN CONSUMER ROUTERS MAKE SHiTTY HOSTS? HOLY FUCK SOMEONE CALL THE NEWSPAPERS, WHO COULD HAVE SEEN THIS COMING?

How can you tell if you are host?

I left midgame as i got bored and it started the host migration thing, i mustve been host for that game but there was no indicator or anything.

I'm interested in knowing too. some people seem to know, but when you ask how they know they never answer or give you some convoluted crap that makes no sense, which makes me believe they don't know.

If you have the modded bars with decent intervals (I use 8 bars @ 25ms each) then the person with all bars present is the host. It is extremely unlikely for anyone to have 8 bars (0-25ms ping) besides the host.

i dont know why but it always picks me ass the "best" host and im on a slow like 1.5mb dsl. i wish i could check a box and say i dont want to host.

i guess that just means that everyone else playing has a shittier connection than you?

Also I think there is at least one port that you need to forward in order to host. You can play fine without doing so, but you won't be selected to host without it forwarded. It's possible most people don't know about it. I don't have a router though.

I don't get picked to host that often but get a good host at least 80% of the time. I'm pretty surprised actually. In a 12 player game, I usually have no less than 6 bars, which under my config I believe means a ping of 125ms or less. Yes it's pretty bad for 2010 but the netcode is built around it so overall it plays fine for me most of the time. The problem is cheaters and balance, not lag really.

Where the fuck have you been playing? I swear half the games I get stuck in these days are hosted in Somalia, if I'm lucky enough to get in. The IWNet code is terrible. There are 12k people online playing TDM and you've gotta wait 30-40 seconds until it even matches you with anyone? What? Then it'll do that awesome thing where it will fill a lobby, look for a host, try to merge the lobby (which is nearly full) with another, then crash.

IWNet is just a failsandwich all around. When you do actually get into a game, about 10% of the servers are hacked with stupid stuff and 25% of the time someone is cheating.

Every once in a while though, it's a lot of fun 🙂

Aside: This map pack release is a disaster. They have basically crashed Steam. Why release at 1 pm?
