Is XP worth the 99 bucks? If so is there another place that has it cheaper?

I'm debating whether or not to pay for XP or just stick with Win2k. What I'm wondering is how well does XP work with the current crop of software/hardware/games etc.

thanks for any input

First thing, don't get XP home. Get XP Pro, you want NTFS.

Secondly, it works very well. They did a good job on it.

That having been said, I'm not sure yet whether I'm sticking with XP or going back to 2K. I like the clean & simple design of 2K, plus the straightforward security as opposed to the over-simplified crap that XP uses by default.

Viper is right. XP is the best new OS release that MS has ever done. Much better then 95, 98 or Me. However, if you're already running Win2K, I'd stick with it. The only real difference in XP is a bunch of stuff designed for less sophisticated users.

I sold XP Pro on the FS/FT forum for $135 shipped a couple months ago. If you're looking to buy the software, that's where I'd try.

I think I'm going to back to Win2k as well. WinXP has _not_ been as stable as Win2k is/was (Edit: ) for me anyway.

I formatted my computer around a week ago to go back to win2k...

WinXP was very easy to setup, since it recognizes more hardware than win2k... And a lot of the configuration/setup steps XP does it automatically...

But one thing (and the main reason why I went back to win2k) was that every night at around 3am, my harddrive will get busy for no reason when I was running XP. I am completely logged out of the system, but for some reason my HD keeps crunching for around 10 mins... It's very likely it's just doing something normal, but I just didnt like it...

To me win2k and XP are the same anyways... Except for the extra steps I need to do when setting up the system with win2k, they're pretty much identical... so I say save your money...

Probably the built-in restore feature backing up files.

That's what I figured too... I thought it either backing up files or creating some file indexes...

There's also one more thing I dont like... It installs MSN messenger by default... and even thought I have it disabled, it pops back up on the taskbar whenever i log into hotmail... so obviously XP is monitoring my web traffic...

MSN can be ripped out and deactivated with just a simple twist of the wrist:

Open C:\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf in Notepad. Do Edit | Replace. In find, enter hide. In replace, leave it blank. Click Replace All. Save the file. Now, when you run Add/Remove in Control Panel and click "Windows Components" it (and other previously hidden applets) will be available for removal!

I personally like XP a lot. You can do a lot more customization in my opinion, and its a good solid software. I love how there are no more blue screens, just simple popup errors. I know my Win2k freezes a lot, once every few days (I leave this box up 24/7). WinXP NEVER EVER FROZE in the 4 months I had it on here. Altho for some reason my system has compatibility problems, wont play games right with XP for some reason. So Im stuck with 2k, which is awesome too.

If you dont wanna pay $100 for it, send me $5 and you can have *MY OFFICIAL COPY!* ;)

Altho its probably about as official as everyone else who has the EXACT SAME CDKEY FOR THEIR OFFICIAL COPY...so dont be all mad when it gets deactivated ;)
