it's supposed to be big in the lesbian community. The show knows it, so they play to it sometimes. The chick who plays Xena has said so in a few interviews. I'm too lazy to find a link.

Two weeks ago, they admitted to being soulmates, inseparable and the only one for each other. Xena revived Gabrielle in the circle of Valkyrie fire with a kiss (not as good as the kiss between Willow & Tara on Buffy) and Gaby later told Beowulf (who is in love with her) that there was no place in her heart for him because Xena occupies all the place. Gaby also told the same thing to a Valkyrie who was also in love with her and wanted to take her away from Xena.
