Is worth fixing a flat tire?

Argo

I got 18" performance run-flat tire that has gooten a leak. The replacement tire will cost me $320, so I'm wondering if fixing it might be an option.

You shouldn't replace just one tire, and it would only cost ~$10 to fix if the leak isn't near the sidewall.

Yeah, try to get it fixed.

Patch the tire. It makes more sense to replace all the tires at once (equal wear and tear if rotated properly).

How durable are the repairs? It's a sports tire on a sports car so I'm a little worried about driving around (I drive hard) with a repair tired.

Also, where do people usually repair their tires? I called Les Scwab - they said they'll do it for free but I may have to wait for a couple of hours.

Get it patched and not plugged and you should not have any problems.

Remember that tires loose their speed ratings (go down to the level of the repair... I think sub 100 mph) if they are plugged or patched. While the patch will most likely hold, the tires are no longer "rated" and racing at a track or something may get you in trouble.

If it's in the tread, then just get it plugged. If it's in the sidewall you're probably screwed, so hope for the best.

If its in the side wall, he isnt probably screwed, he IS screwed. If its in the tread, get it patched. Ive never had a problem with a patched tire and I drive pretty hard.

I've never worried about patching tires. Just plug them. You can do it yourself with a 5 dollar kit from walmart or you can take it to your local mom and pop garage and they'll probably do it for free (tip them 5 bucks).

Bull. I've plugged many a race tire as have other people I know who race.

You know, I've always heard that and was just considering that advice the other day. Who came up with that? Tire companies so they could sell one more tire? I have a tire that ended up with a slipped belt after a nice spring pothole. A few days later, it went flat. I figured, "great, now I have to replace both tires." But, why?? Tires don't wear evenly. When you rotate tires, the amount of wear on the tires is not identical. So, what difference would it make, as long as the tread was very similar (if not the same brand/model) and the existing tires aren't that old.

Why is it worse to have a puncture in the sidewall?

Because that is what is holding your car off the ground. 😉

Personally, I fix my flats if they are on my DDs which are not high performance and aren't driven hard. My toy, on the other hand, would get a new tire, at the least.

the side wall is softyu than the tread and will cause a blow out

but they do lose their speed rating. The tires on compromised. Not saying that I wouldn't race on them (if it is a patch, hell, I trust it up to 150+ mph, maybe stupidly). Just remembering what I've read about z rated tires.

Are you for real? A $350 tire + mount and balance vs a $10-$15 repair, you must be rich 🙂

Just cuz you dont see the hole doesnt mean it cannot be fixed, as long as the leak is not on the sidewall it can be fixed. Just ask for it to be patched, not plugged.

Can you drive off on a patched tire right away? I don't have a spare.

This has got to be a joke thread, how can someone with a $300+ tire be this clueless about patches and tire repair?

And yes, you can, on the off chance you have more money then teh smarts😛
And I have to say op, you are the first person I have ever encountered that ever asked if it would be smarter to pay $320+ for a tire, then having it fixed, if it could be.

If you don't know about tire repair, you haven't been driving hard.
