is "world" 1 syllable or 2?

Dictionaries will probably compress it to just one part, but phonetically it's 2.

Word is 1. Add an L and a new sound must be created. World = 2.

So dictionaries lie? Why do they compress it down to 1 if it's 2? To saves the bytes? The bytes they do nothing!

So you're saying bled is two syllables too?

I vote for 1

Dictionary-humpers 🙂

You seem to forget that dictionaries, like any other book, are written by humans who have their own opinions, or rely on majority influence. And don't forget that the majority influence can, and is often, not wholly correct.

I say that the word "world" has 2 syllables. Or at least, it is closer to having 2 syllables than having only 1.

I have no accent, and have always pronounced it as "were-old."

Like I said in the other thread, I guess I'm a dumbass. 🙁

Those are all 4 letter words. We're dealing with a 5 letter word, specifically a 5 letter word containing a syllabic consonant surrounded by 2 opposing consonants.

Don't give up so easily! Mobobuff has taken up your cause! Fight Fight!

On second thought maybe if you conceded so soon it means you're open minded and not hard headed or stubborn. Not a dumbass afterall.

How the hell else can you possibly pronounce it? 😕

"Wurld?" You can't compress that into one linear tongue movement... "uld" has to exist in there somewhere.

He has a point there. The man obviously knows his linear tongue movements. I'll refrain from asking how though... ;-)
