Is Windows 9 the start of 'Windows as a Service'?

Well since Apple has a OSX, MS needs one too. Fair is fair....

I think Microsoft may be onto the next Windows release, or two, before Apple ever leaves behind the "OS 10" version. 😛

Sidenote:
I'm actually almost scared of where Apple will take OS X - they're rocking a relatively stale (though very solid) design paradigm, and when even Linux DE's like Gnome and, well Windows for that matter, have made significant strides to move beyond an age-old paradigm... it can't be that far away for Apple.

And I almost don't want them to move that far forward. Will we see OS X 10.11, 10.12? Will they go the Microsoft route and strangely say OS X 11.0 at some point? The OS X brand will stay until they either truly unify iOS and Mac OS, or at least they go balls to the wall to change how OS X is utilized.

I don't think the majority of Microsoft's customer base is anywhere near capable of moving to Linux as a full time OS,

I get your point, and in a desktop environment I agree, but I think its interesting how many people I know that never had a computer, or got rid of their computer in favor of an ipad or android tablet.

I mean, I know android isn't really *linux* in the desktop environment, and these aren't power users, but still though, its kinda-sorta moving to linux. Also, there are chromebooks (although I don't know of anyone using a chromebook solo, most are add-ons to a windows or mac platform for ultra-portability.

Still though, makes you think....

I only use Windows for PC gaming(Steam,Origin, online gaming etc),at 51 I do use Linux(self taught on Mint and Ubuntu) and have no issues using Linux full time, would be great if Linux became a mainstream gaming OS or got DX12, but we all know that is wishful thinking by me.

Yeah I don't see Linux really standing a chance in the gaming world until OpenGL becomes the standard for gaming graphics. I'd love for SteamOS to take off but until that happens I doubt steamOS is going to be anyones main operating system on a gaming rig. That said, are not most android tablet/ipad games written in openGL? Or am I wrong on that? Perhaps that might shift things a bit.

The other downside to steamOS is that its not a particularly great HTPC OS either. Steam in-home streaming is pretty slick (I use it on my Windows HTPC), but with no DVR, Netflix, Flash, or Hulu support it doesn't make steamos a compelling choice for the living room. If they could get there though - that would be pretty cool.

Interestingly, Steam just announced that Borderlands 2 (somewhat old) and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel are both going to be available for SteamOS. That gives me a little hope that just maybe this idea could be gaining some traction.
