Is Win2k advanced server significantly worse than Win2kP for gaming?

I get around 15 fps on BF 1942 and Raven shield no matter what resolution I use.

system is

T-bird 1.3Ghz 100Mhz FSB
512 SD 133 Ram
GF4 TI 4200@4400
Abit KT7 Via
Win2k server

Not after trouble shooting tips as I have trouble shot to death including replacing ram and useing only one bank of ram etc etc.

Just wish to know if anyone knows if there is a signficant loss in gaming performance on win2k advanced server.

Well, Win2K server will likely have more background services running than Win2K Pro. Check to see what's running in the background and see if you can shut anything down.

Isn't 1.3 GHz a bit low for BF1942 or Raven Shield? I don't have direct experience with either game, but from what I've heard you may not have the horsepower to run either one at acceptable framerates.

As far as backround services go I've tweaked that. I was just wondering if their is any big difference in how windows operates the hardware and drivers as opposed to win2k Pro.

I agree that I may not have the horspower especialyl with a cpu with 100mhz fsb.

I picked up my new gigabyte mobo this morning and barton 2500+ with 512mb ddr 333mhz kingston ram. 8) Hopeing this will solve my gaming woes. If not I have a friend who can get me a copy of 2k. I could als oduel boot with win98...

Gaming performance in other games such as quake2 is really good. I realise the difference between a q2 engine and an unreal 2 engine... 8)

Thanks for the reply.

The only real differences between 2K, and the three versions of 2K server are which services are running. 2K Servers add several extra 'server' services. Other then that, they are essentially the same OS.

And the only differance between a Zaurus (Linux handheld) and a Red Hat desktop are all the services that run on top of them, if you want to game just use 2K Pro, if you really want the opportunity to play with 2K Adv. Server than dual-boot.

No, there will not be an appreciable difference.

Most of those "background services" that others are talking about aren't installed by default anyway.

All flavors of W2K are the same binaries.

I've done gaming on w2k server, not advanced (not much dif anyway) and it works just fine. If it's on hardware that is barely cutting it you might want to kill some of those extra services that run but that's only if the hardware is cutting it close.
