Is water worth switching to if i dont care about noise?

I will be buying an x2 3800+, 7800gtx, ballistix ram,.....

I really dont care about how much noise it makes (i need computer noise to sleep lol ... weird stuff) How much more of an overclock do you guys think i can achieve for my cpu (main concern) and vid card (not as much of a concern)

the cooling i would get would probably be about 80 bucks or so for air vs about 250 for water.

Worthit? not worthit?

Any replies appreciated

In my opioion good air cooling is almost as good as water cooling so no it won't be worth it.

As for OCing I got a X2 3800 and I have it stable at 2.7Ghz

Water will probably have 10-20C lower tempratures, dont know how much that effects overclocking.

Those nice components and you may not use watercooling? That's a shame... I'd pay $180 more for my components to be cooler, that's just me. I'd go with watercooling, but that is also coming from a watercooling person. Maybe I am biased I guess...

I would think 100Mhz better o/c max. But it will differ from system to system.

well basically water takes the high temps out of the equation, which means that you would be able to run voltages well over 1.6v with out worry of burning it, and more volts is what will enable you to run the processor at a higher frequency and be more stable.

i switched cases recently and sprung a leak in my water cooling :(

but it gave me a chance to see how water and air would differ in temps....

so with the speed and voltage in my sig, the cpu ran almost 60C's 100% load (f@h) with the stock cooler.

on water, it was doing around 45 to 47C's... almost a 13 to 15C difference...

but like someone else said... nice air cooling can be almost as good as watercooling. i'm sure if i got the xp-90c or 120 that the temp would drop at least 5 to 6C's on load.

I know it increases components life if you keep them cool, but does it really increase their lifespan by an appreciable amount? I mean if those things last me 5 years, I would probably throw everything out by that time anyway wouldn't i? I don't know maybe i'm wrong but do cpus/vidcards/etc really burn out in less than like 5-6 years even if overclocked if say i had an xp-90?

you know.. i've never heard of a piece of hardware dying due to age or due to long term use....

i know people who kill components but never "wear out" a component....

but who keeps computers for 5 to 6 years anyway? :)

I still have a 486...

Exactly my point so i dont understand why when people talk about WCing thye always mention "your components will run cooler" .... why does that matter? I understand for overclocking but from what I understand you won't get more than 100mhz out of that.

I think everybody els will top out at 2.5-2.6ghz and you will have a shot at 2.7-2.8ghz....

I see, do you think that would be the only advantage really of WCing?

Well if you gt a waterblock for the vid card as well you can OC the pis out of that as well....

You said noise is not a factor and for most that is the main reason they go to water.

I think water will protect the longevity of your parts only if you were in the haboits of running them waayyy out of thermal specs or overvolting them much past the 10% rule...

How muc are you looking at??? I like the whole case setup rather then kits, but I would go with waterblocks for the CPU, GPU and NB chipset and then just have 2 120mm low volted fans...Also use a PSU liek enermax with adjustable fan speed...

I would only do it for noise, since speed is not enough for me to drop 300-400 clams for 200more mhz...I would rather just build another box....

Well i have already bought a P180, and a powerstream 520w

But yea i guess the answer is if noise is not of much concern to me i shouldn't get it.

See what you can get without it and if the "need for speed" seduces you to get more then you can always get one of the kits and piece it together...do cpu first and then try gpu, etc....You may find you do fine without it...

Save the money for the soon to be socket change..
