Is water cooling needed anymore?

My old, current machine has two 7800 GTX's that I had too water cool because they set really close to each other. There wasn't any air flow enough to keep the cards cool.
I am going to build another machine soon and I would like to not water cool if possible. I plan on buying the next generation cards hopefully this month. Do you think water cooling will have to be done? Thank you.

It has never HAD to be done. The only reason it might HAVE to be done is if you have a case with terrible airflow or are trying to OC as much as possible without resorting to DIce or LN2. If you WANT to water cool, do it. But nothing at the time requires it.

Water is a Hobby, not a Necessity.

Its something you want, not need.

And its something you better be prepared to go in knowing what your taking up, instead of having it be out of a spur of the moment thing.

That being said, anyone curious on why the increase threads like this?

Is the Next Gen cards that truely scary?

I have to respectfully disagree on the necessity of water cooling. Like I have stated the two BFG 7800GTX's had to be mounted right to each other. I had high temps when playing games that caused some distortion to the video. My case has several intake and exhaust fans but that did not help. I tried replacing the heatsink and fan on the video cards with a Zalman aftermarket fan but that did not help either. Only after I installed a top of the line water cooling kit did my problem get resolved.

What case did you have, out of curiosity?

PS: My 1337 post! :)
EDIT: Nvm, that was last post. Damnit.

My case is a cooler master stacker with every fan possible mounted inside.

You mean the stacker EVO or the 830, then im having a hard time believing this.

I dont understand how you cant keep 2 7800GTX's in check, while ruby does a HD3870X2 + ARECA 1680ix Controller with Low Noise fans perfectly fine.

I think you have a different problem, pictures would be nice.

I will try to post some pictures tonight. My MB is a 3 1/2 year old nforce board from DFI. The two sli slots are right next to each other to where there is no sufficient air flow for the first slot or video card.

Yeah... no way your rig was too hot when Rubycon's isn't. You must have some CRAPPY fans mounted, or your room is way too hot, etc. to be having this problem. Ruby has a RAID controller right next to a dual chip vid card; 7800GTX's cannot match that heat.

Well the 3870X2 cooling system is far superior to NV's. Nearly all of the heat is sent out of the case as it SHOULD be. Even still overheating should not be a problem with convection/active aircooling.

Pictures as promised. You will notice the two video cards as well as the sound card, all very close to each other. The cards do not exhaust to the outside but in the case (when the fans were installed). I tried to get help with this just over 3 years ago when I first built this machine. Water cooling was the only solution at the time.

You need to dust that case out, haha. :) Something must have been wrong, because I've seen quad Crossfire set-ups without water cooling, and those HAVE to generate more heat than 2 7800GTX's.

Yea , it's been too long since I opened this case, a dusting was done with a can of air after I took these pics. I had to top off the reservoir as well. The two video cards are factory overclocked BFG's. And keep in mind that each card takes two spaces. Maybe that had something to do with it. I don't know.
By the way the purple coloring or water treatment is a product of Chemaqua, a water treatment company who I work for their parent corporation. It is for treating chill or hot water closed loop systems. Which means the water coolant system will outlast this computer. And give more heat exchange properties than just plain water.
Anyway my temps were a hell of a lot lower with this water cooler system than just the fans.
One more thing, look for some of these parts to be sold here cheaply when I upgrade hopefully this month.
