Frontline is doing a program titled "is wal-mart good for America?" next week. I know there has been tons of debate about this, but I am usually surprised with how much good info frontline comes up with for their reports. I'm not certain for sure, but I think this is the first time this program will air. Anyway, I'm interested in answers to this question. I don't care if you like walmart or not, is it good for America?

Thanks! Frontline produces some of the best documentaries out there. They should release them to theaters. :)

This one will be interesting as there are people who benefit from WalMart.

I remember when Walmart was run by Sam Walton, he took pride in marketing Made in the USA products. They used to have signs hanging all over the store touting that a certain product created X number of jobs. Those are gone along with any non-agricultral product that is made in the USA.

The only people that can be 'blamed' for this are the consumers who demand low-cost goods at any (non-monetary) price. A company is is business to make money by satisfying its customers' needs and wants by any (legal) means necessary, nothing more. I hate Walmart's business practices, but not enough to not shop there when necessary. *shrug*

It's kind of a Chicken and Egg situation. Customers don't go to a store and whine about the Price, but if StoreX down the street advertises a lower Price the Consumer will go there.

Many people will argue that Walmart provides lousy pay for their employees, but a lot of retailers are the same way. Try working for Hardee's or Mc Dee's. Then they will say how many products Walmart buys from overseas. Guess what if you drive a car you are probably using a whole lot of foreign products in your assembled in America automobile. Not to mention your computer, which is almost 100% foreign made. Even Dell assembles computers overseas. Run for the hills! You cant hide from them darn foreigners.

What about the Free Economy??? We hate it when other countries will not buy our stuff, but we cry like a baby when walmart sells a made in China Baseball. If you do not like it I suggest you vote with your wallet!

What a unique idea . . . .

Walmart is the end result of unregulated (or midly regulated) capitalism. In the early 1900s they would call it "social darwinism". The companies that cut the most costs and bring in the most profit will eventually bankrupt/buy all others. This is happening in other industries such as banking, insurance, and television as big companies buy smaller ones or merge with equal size companies.

The only way to avoid this is to add business regulation, like the trust-busting of the Roosevelt administration, which Bush will not do, or to vote with your wallet and buy elsewhere as was said above.

Just finished watching, and I must say; I am intrigued (sp?)

How does Wal-Mart affect U.S. negatively vs. postively ? I want more examples of each.

I hate Walmart but maybe we should let consumers and localities decide... I think local communities should be able to shut out walmart type stores... If the red states want walmart, they can go for it.
