the flood of Northerners has made it more difficult to tell how redneck a particular area is.

This is true, however most of the northerners, are well,-- up north,(Fairfax, etc). Down below Richmond where I live, it's, shall I say different. As an example, I was driving down a country road and I saw a billboard that read, Looking to buy, or sell your home? Then call, KKKate Realestate.
My wife, and I retired here from Ca. and at that moment, I looked at her and said, "honey, I don't think we're in San Diego anymore".[/quote]

WTH? You left San Diego for that?

As a North Carolinian, I am gonna have to say NO. As BrownTown said, when I think of deep south, I think of Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana Georgia, South Carolina, some of Tennessee, and parts of Florida (but Florida is almost on its own really).

Florida = Yankee State

As an official southerner, I vote we ban Florida from having the southern title!

Also, Virginia did succeed from the union and a lot of the confederacy's leaders came from there. Kinda hard to argue that it WAS the south, even if times have changed.

I , as well as many of my northern virginia neighbors, often wish northern va could secede from va and perhaps become an independent territory!

that way, people would stop bunching us all together!

seriously. take 95 south past about woodbridge, va and tell me if you notice any "changes"

FTMFW!!! We're also the only reason Virginia is even remotely wealthy.

<---------------Lives in Oak Hill, right next to Reston, Fairfax County

Having lived there for two years I would absolutely call it the south, complete with southern mentality and all. I don't know if I would go so far as to say 'deep south', as that evokes visions of Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, etc.

florida, with the exception of like miami and key west, is totally a bible belt southern state.

I went to VT (deep south), spent alot of time outside of Blacksburg, and now live in Fairfax County (as northeast as it gets), and I would say that yes, VA is still the south because many of you are forgetting how large this state is from tip to tip. It was the freakin' CAPITAL of the rebellion, people! I remember driving around backwoods roads and seeing swastikas proudly on display outside of trailer homes and whatnot. I worked with alot of blue collar locals, and the only things they ever talked about were hunting, Jesus, and trucks. Yes, outside of the DC metro area, and probably VA beach cause of all the tourism, Virginia is still very much deep in the southern mindset, but geographically they're not "deep" like Alabama, Georgia, etc.

Look at Florida. It's deeper south than all of them, but it's not "the South."

excluding nova and surrounding areas, i would consider VA to be in the south. i also reserve deep south label for mississippi, alabama, and parts of SC, FL, GA. IIRC, the decision to put DC where it is (south) was a concession from the north to south

Haha, the rest of the state would be completely happy with that, too.

I wonder how happy they'd be when their taxes go up.
