^^^ Again, this has been stated many times. It depends a great deal on the user. If that's all you do is game and nothing but game, then single core is sufficiant right now. But if you multi-task, i.e., encode or burn DVDs while folding or gaming, then you won't miss a beat with a X2.

That's not where I'm getting my Opty 165 s939. ;)

As far as I've seen there are no disadvantages to dual core (sparse amount of people have some compatiblity issues with select software) and even price wise the 3700+ SD is what... $50 bucks cheaper than the X2??

I think it is untrue to say today's software doesn't benefit DC. Nvidia's new 80.xx drivers are supposed to utilize both cores, and if you're anything like me, I Alt+tab a lot from games to the desktop between deaths. Furthermore, I keep AIM, Ventrillo, etc. running in the backround while I game and having a second core would definately benifit here.

Although, they may be small advantages, I think they well deserve the $50 dollar premium.

I saw some CPU scaling benchmarks (I think it was on firingsquad) with the 7800 GTX and the only CPU that really made the 7800 lag behind was the friggin' 3000+. Unless you overclock it, it's crap as far as gaming next year goes (at stock). I got my 3400+ 2.4 GHz on sale and I recommend it to anyone who's not in a rush for a dual core.

Hell, I even play the demo of BF2 with "only" 1GB of RAM and it's smooth to me.

The 3000+ is not crap, its just not as good. But it really does not matter because all Venice core's are similar but at a different frequency. I wonder how my cheaper 3200+ overclocked would fair against your much more $ 3700+?

bwahahahaha

my "crap Venice" E3 is running at 2.72ghz on 1.61v for a whole heck of a lot less than you paid for that 3400+ at 2.4ghz.

I wouldn't be surpirised if your 3400+ doesn't even hit 2.7, let alone stable at same volts as mine

the key here is that if you have a good mobo/PSU and you plan to overclock:
Opteron 146/146/165
Venice E3 3000+
X2 3800+
forget the rest, just paying extra for what you could get for FREE!

Shenkoa, you need a better mobo to OC the Venice 3000+. those Neo2 seem extremely hit-and-miss anything over ~275FSB, some hit 320 easily, some can't hit 280

from the results I've seen to date, E3 Venice 3000+ almost always OC better than more expensive E3 3200+

I just recently got a 3500Venice used.. great CPU, would recommend.

obviously X2 is the future, but they are also more money than a 3500Venice... plus, for gaming, the 3500 makes sense, as games do not support multi-CPU's just yet!

Wait until next week when hopefully more Opteron 939s are available. For the price of $150, and most people already hitting at least 2.8-3ghz with these... i'd def want one of those! If there avail soon, i'm gonna ebay my 3000+ and get the Opty 144.

^ That's the rub, though isn't it. This is an overclocker's board for the most part, so many of us are overclocking our chips. And the 3000+ is a beast.

I have a late E3 3000+ that still runs at 2.6 Ghz, which is 4000+ territory. For less than the price of a 3400+, I got the 3000+ and a very nice CPU cooler to overclock it. My 4000+ with XP-90 runs cooler than a 3400+ on stock cooling as well...
