Is Venice still king for value

I'm looking for a mobo and processor to go with my agp x800xl.

-I'm thinking about a asrock dual agp-pci-e mobo and a a new processor. I'm thinking a 3000 venice if it's still got at least 1-2 years of usability.

-or should I just sit and wait for something better in the future?

-if i do upgrade right now from a 754 my limit is 250.

frys had an add for the following proccessor and a ecs mobo that is agp and pci-e for 209. it's an ecs and the agp is one of those crummy agp express slots. I was thinking of selling the ecs board and getting the asrock dual agp pci-e board instead.

Yes, Venice is still a great buy, but if you are planning on overclocking, you'd probably be just as well off with a (much cheaper) 3000+.

i also got a zalman 7000alcu a friend of mine ain't using. too bad i aint got nothin that can take advantage of it.

Definitely. Although, the 3200+'s aren't much more at Ewiz and you get the flexibility of the 10x multi. They *should* overlock just as well as the 3500+ and are much cheaper.

i think i'm just going to wait and see if fry's ever has a combo deal witha 939 without a crummy motherboard. If that don't happen soon i'm just going to sit and wait until something better. Maybe when applications catch up with dual processing i'll get a fast x2.

If you want to overclock, then don't get a crummy motherboard!

I'll definatley look into that. hopefully they won't be more than 300.

why not? i got the money, might as well go for it? i'll be shopping around for a 3700+ sand diego and probably and an asrock board.(i have a x800xl agp i'm not getting rid of)

i think the opty 144/146 is hte best value right now.

they have 1 meg L2 and run 1.8 and 2.0 ghz respectively.

there is a guy on XS.org that is taking orders for 144 and 146 opterons.

$160 for the 144 and $220 for the 146.

not shabby at all!

well i can tell you to go ahead with a asrock 939 duel-SATA2, yay agp and PCIe, i love mine....

and yes it has full speed agp and PCIe

I disagree, I have worked with both the 3000+ and 3200+ Venice on my board, the 3000+ is hard to get a good OC out of. Its best to stick to the 3200+ for the extra multiplier, both are E3.

Out of personal experience.

Comming from an owner of a 3700+ SD I would definately say go with a 3800+ X2. I jumped on my SD too early and now wish I had waited for the X2's. Dual core is the future! Choosing a single core processor at this point is dumb (unless you don't have the cash...).

Absolutely. I'm go all out and getting an s939 165 Opteron.. Basically, a "Cherry-picked" 1.8GHz Toledo. I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't o/c well in my DFI NF4 Ultra-D. 😛

I am running:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Processor (Venice) @ 2.7 GHz, stock air; 1.55V
DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR

So I can say that Venice is a good value. Personally, the 3200 is probably better than my 3000 since it has a 10x multiplier which makes o/c easier.

i agree that dual core is the future. But what exactly is right now. The future i'm expecting will have much better x2 processors and much better software that will take advantage of it. But that's not exactly right now.

agreed. Dual core is quite expensive right now. While having dual cpu's is fun - the lack of applications to support it sortof sucks. Personally i'm waiting until I see games/software that start to take advantage of the dual core technologies. That is when I will upgrade to X2. I just built the rig in my sig - mostly because I've wanted to try out the LV xeons for a long time, finally decided to go with it. Otherwise I would've stuck with my 2500+ running at ~2.3.
