Is using ATI's upgrade to X850 XT 256MB AGP from 9600xt good way to go?

I was thinking of going the Asrock 939 dual mb route...I only have about $350 to use for upgrades.

So what's the final cost?

Considering ATI will almost definately charge you the MSRP for the card, it's probably a bad deal. They only seem to have good deals on refurbs.

You can get a GTO2 and mod it to an x850xt for $200, otherwise you can get a 7800GT, both of which I'm guessing will be cheaper than what you're considering.

You could probably get $50 for that card.

They give you $50 back, but they charge $50 more than usual.

GTO2 for $200? Will people stop recommending that it doesn't cost $200 anymore!

I read something today about them being back in stock for cheap somewhere.

Nonetheless there are now powercolor GTO's that unlock to X800XTs or something silly like that.

The X800XL is good too for cheap, probably a better deal than what ATI is trying to do to this poor chap.

I've seen x800xl go for as low as around 250-300.

And the x800xl should do fine as long as you're not planning to use one of those megaLCDs.

OP, read this thread by me, it should help you make your purchase.

well the whole problem is limited $$. I suppose getting that Asrock mb would help. I could get a cpu upgrade, use my existing pc3200 ram, and get the cheap gto or something.

I think the best limited budget upgrade right now is a DFI infinity MB, your exisiting memory, a Connect3D GTO, and a 3000+ or 3200+ Venice, depending on how close they happen to be in price. Buying that for about $435 and then selling your current MB, CPU, and GPU for say $150 (and that might be low or high, no idea how much used Athlon XPs sell for) gets you a system that will play anything you want at nice settings for $285. If your budget is $350 I would add a XP-90 and fan and if you arn't happy with your OC on the GTO an ATI silencer, all told still under $350. Good luck.

 if you can get it. Might as well try for a while. Even a 6600GT would be a huge upgrade, or a x800 vanilla for that matter.

Greetings,

I previously owned an All-In-Wonder 9600XT (factory clocked higher than a basic Radeon 9600XT), it was starting to show it's age... I upgraded to a Radeon X850XT PE (and installed an ATI Silencer 5 rev 2)... I have it clocked to 601/1256 (from stock 540/1180), and couldn't be happier! It does everything I want it to and then some...

-Thanks

9600XT to a 6600Gt is not a 'huge' upgrade - it's a moderate upgrade, and i would not upgrade to another 128MB card like a 6600GT. I would go for the AIW X800XT @ the egg (if you just have to have AGP). If not and that's too much $$ wise i would go for a 6800GS PCIe for $209.00-215.00.
