Is upgrading the Wi-Fi card in an old laptop as simple as swapping out for a newer card?

The reason I ask is the requirements for things like the antennas/connectors.

I currently have an Intel 4965AGN.

It has garbage support for Windows 10 though, and is buggy/crashes the system regularly, so I'm looking to get a cheap replacement. Say an Intel Wireless-AC 9260. But would I simply be able to swap them out and such? Or is there hardware incompatibility problems?

Laptop is a Dell Vostro 1400, btw.

I think that you need a "dell" version of your wifi card, as I believe that your laptop has a whitelist, and uses cards that have Intel chipsets, but dell-specific / identified firmware. GL Let us know how it goes.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the case, as the Wi-Fi card in my laptop is completely Intel branded. There's nothing Dell about it.
