Is upgrade from Vista really worth it?

Vista Home Premium was lame in the beginning with hardware incompatibilities, resource hog, various quirks. But with enough RAM and service packs, I honestly like it now. Why go to 7 if you don't need the frame rates in latest games?

The minor visual and other enhancements might be worth it coming from XP, but don't seem worth $100 for a Vista user. I can't go 64 bit because of legacy apps, so I figure why not wait for Windows 8?

This is a personal call really,Vista SP2 was always great for me,Win7 has some nice new features however if you are happy with your current OS and there's nothing you really need in Win7 then I guess there's no reason why you should not stay with Vista for the time being.

I like to try out new things so that was one reason why I jumped on Win7 bandwagon,you can bet I'll be trying out Win8 down the road too and Ubuntu/Kubuntu 9.10 tomorrow when its released.

End of the day its your money so you are the one that has to justify the spending or the need to upgrade.

I went from XP to 7 on my computer but my 2 kids went from Vista to 7 on theirs. They both liked Vista and were told that 7 was an enhanced, streamlined Vista so they both bought the upgrade. Did they really need to? I doubt it ..... neither were hardcore gamers or power users. The fact that they got the upgrades from Newegg for $49 (pre-ordered), may have played a major part in it too. I'd say it's just a matter of personal preference. If you can get it cheap .... go for it but I wouldn't spend $100 or more on it if I already had Vista.

For me the SSD drive support and better multi-GPU support are enough to warrant an upgrade. The lower system requirements (OS overhead) are nice too.

For your computer, you're probably not going to see much benefit from an upgrade.

I've only had it installed for a day and it just keeps getting better and better. Vista 64 to 7 64. Administrative Tools makes things a lot easier to find, Windows Mail without Messenger, Fax capable. The things that irritated me most about Vista are taken care. And since I only paid 49.95 for it what else can I say.

To be honest, I really couldn't tell a difference performance wise and I play games all the time. Of course, I never whined about Vista being a crap OS. To be honest, I haven't experienced a problem with any OS since Windows ME.

I used Vista x64 for about 2 years and thought it was fine except for minor issues here and there but I'd say the Windows 7 UI feels a bit snappier in general. Performance-wise it's about the same. There are little tweaks here and there that fix some of the minor annoyances I had with Vista. However, if you are happy with your current operating system then it's probably not worth upgrading unless there is some feature in 7 that you are dying to have.

It's worth it if you got one of the cheap upgrades to 7 ($50 preorder or $30 student edition or $20 acm membership). Otherwise, I'd say no, I didn't notice much of a difference from Vista.

I just installed Windows 7 Professional only because I was able to acquire it at $30 as a student. Beyond that, I wanted 64-bit addressing for extended memory. I still have licenses for Vista Business at 32-bit which I hope to install as a virtual OS in my Windows 7 machine. All this to be able to handle tech support calls should they come.

Microsoft should have offered Vista users a much cheaper price. I upgraded from Vista only because I got a free copy from Microsoft. Vista after sp1 is a pretty nice OS and I was happy with it. There are a lot of improvements with 7 that are underneath the hood.. but depending on the system I am not sure you would even notice it enough to be worth the upgrade price.

Now I don't know what kind of time frame for the next OS. I think 7 was accelerated because the bad press of Vista... so Msoft may take it a little slower with 8.

I just upgraded from Vista Ultimate x64 to Windows 7 Pro x64 today. I got Windows 7 for free through my school and figured, why not? Honestly, Vista ran GREAT on my desktop and I really had no reason to upgrade the only reason I did was because 7 was free. I would not pay to go to windows 7 from Vista.

I decided to leave Vista Home Premium on my fairly powerful desktop. I only do light gaming.

However, I did install Win 7 Pro on an older Inspiron laptop that had been running Vista Home Basic with 2 GB RAM and integrated graphics. 7 is way, way, better there. Very glad I did it.

The UI should be enough of a change, vista's UI was a step down from XP's. Windows 7 corrects that.

I prefer Vista. I have a copy of Win7 I doubt I'll ever use. XP-7? definitely, Vista-7? Depends. If you can get it cheap, and you like the features better, sure. Otherwise, there isn't enough of a difference between them, and with some of the changes I prefer the Vista way better.

Not really worth the money to upgrade unless you get it cheap or your getting it for a netbook/ULV laptop where win7 is a lot better.

I did buy a copy for my desktop just so every comp had the same os (laptops came with win7). Lots easier to deal with drives and software that way.

After using 7 for a few months now, I definitely want to get a copy of Win7 for my HTPC. Vista is fine but it boots up TOO DAMN SLOW and I want my HTPC to be able to boot up faster.

Its the little things. Using Vista won't put you at any disadvantage, especially if you install DX11. However, I find that the overall experience is more polished in Win7. The interface is a bit more streamlined than Vista. To each our own I guess.

I've not been the world's biggest Vista fan. My personal Vista system has had an "unfixable" freezing problem that, I'm sure, would be fixed with a re-install. As far as I can tell, it's likely caused by some third-party utility I installed long ago, since my Vista was rock-stable before that time frame.

Vista SP2 seemed to fix the last of the little problems that I had. If it wasn't for the the desire to re-install and for a real use for Win7's XP Mode, I'd likely stay with Vista. And have have a couple of dozen Win7 licenses available to me, so it's not a cost issue.
