I just finished negotiating with my employees unions for the next three years. It was very apparent that they are feeling the pinch of a poor economy and many more non-union employers. Our deal which was ratified last week is:

Year 1 - 0.5% increase
Year 2 - 0.6% increase
Year 3 - 2.3% increase

I agree; I never said Union must be destroyed. Rather, they need to be restructure for the better good, maybe not the best for the workers but better for the socieity as a whole. Remember in my example I never mention anything about the trade union.

Union has its place in society but it has too much pull in term of UAW and other public union. UAW basically receive unsustainable benefits for their workers and thanks to modern medical technology, they tend to live longer than expected; which made the drain on GM even bigger than expected specially for their retired worker. One might argue that GM should have never made the agreement; but that hindsight 20/20 for me.

this isn't even true either. the only thing that matters is "to big to fail" if you reach that, you can run in the red forever and you are ok.
And you can take your bail-out money and grow even bigger. It's like when the government decided to pay farmers to not grow corn. You'd take that money, buy more land, and then agree to not grow more corn. Amazing profit margins in not growing corn and in being too big to fail.

Yes yes, unions destroyed the countrys economy and then gave themselves giant bonus's... oh wait.

Sure there are some union abuses, but....
The repubs would have some ground to stand on if they had hung up some of the wall street folks to dry, but they didn't, so really they are kicking folks who are down while looking away when other criminals are laughing their pants off, moral high ground not found.

Why hasn't the Obama administration filed charge against those Wall St folks you mention? Why has the status quo continued under Obama? Could it be that some of the same rats are now part of his administration and/or advise him?

i honestly don't care about obama, but this is about the repubs, they are the ones going after the unions as enemy number one now.

Any performance incentives in the negotiations? Can an employee move up the ladder so to speak by outperforming others? Just my opinion, but I don't think I would like a job where my salary is dictated, (maybe agreed to is a better term) years in advance.

I think the unions need to be dealt with like AT&T. Consider them a monopoly and break them up. Instead of an UAW, make them GMAW, FAW, CAW, and so forth. I don't think any union should be able to represent workers from more than one company. This would limit the size of the unions and not allow an entire sector of one industry to attach an individual company. If the management of one of these sectors all colluded against the unions they would be upset, but like all those that tried to influence the WI legislature, unions are ok with it when they do it. I also believe that when public sector unions start getting involved in political donations and support, it is a conflict of interest and gives union members additional political power over the citizenry which should be illegal. In the private sector, I would not mind smaller unions evenly matching the companies they represent.

Also, EVERY STATE SHOULD BE A RIGHT TO WORK STATE! I should never be forced to join a union in order to work.
