Is U2 Selling out?

I think the iPod commercial they did is more of a sell-out maneuver than pre-releasing the album on iTunes or having a U2 iPod.

They sold out a long time ago.

Agreed. Their last decent album was probably Joshua Tree but I don't think they've ever achieved a better sound than War. That was their best work by far.

Just because they haven't had better albums than War (IYHO) doesn't mean they sold out. That's like saying Pearl Jam sold out because nothing topped the sound of Ten.

Well, they definitely stopped being creative and just started making ballads and/or rehashing old sounds. They were passionate about their music and I think they lost that. Just making albums and touring for the sake of a paycheck is selling out IMHO. Certainly doing commercials for some big corporation qualifies.

I can still listen to War and get goose bumps from the lyrics and the great sound. Nothing they did after that affected me the same way.

Not really... why not take advantage of a popular medium?? It's be like saying that they sold out, because they offered people who came to their first concert a copy before anyone else...

Vertigo's a decent song.. definitely a change from ATYCLB... Looking forward to hearing the rest when i get a spare moment.

Bah. Do you honestly think they couldn't live in a level comfort that neither you or I will ever know for the rest of their lives with the amount of money they have now?

They don't need to make another album for the money, they do it because they still want to play music.

Reminds self: Get the frickin War CD already!!

I haven't listened to War in 15ish years back when I had a decent Tape Deck. It is by far the best U2 Album ever. Though I like Joshua Tree, if there was an Album that was the begining of a "sellout", it was that Album. Before Joshua Tree U2 had a more edgy and unique sound with Lyrics that cut to the bone. That said, U2 is still a great band with great songs on all their Albums.

Well, maybe they need to starve again and get passionate about something to get that edge back. They certainly don't have it anymore IMHO.
