I ask because both of my Dell LCD's have both VGA & DVI ports... Since i run one on each, i was wondering if i get an HDTV cable box that has DVI out, if i could run it into my LCD?

Well yes, my Scientfic Atlanta HD DVR box downstairs is hooked into my HDTV via HDMI... However, i wanted to get HDTV upstairs and hell, if i could use my monitor it would save me a HELL of alot of money...

HDMI is digital like DVI except that it transmits both audio & video...

I think you can do that.

It seems like DVI would be the same for everything.

HDMI is another connection, but the video part has the same pins as DVI, you just need a little converter cable. HDMI carries audio with it too.

edit: I'm so slow

No, not the same, one uses more pins but I dont know the details, there are adapters to make the connection work but not at full capacity for hd.

DVI=DVI no matter where it is. HDMI= DVI + Audio. HDMI with DVI converter = DVI.

So, if i get another HDTV box that has DVI out, i can run it into the DVI input on my LCD and it should work?

Simple test. Take your cable box over to your monitor. You'll have your answer in a minute or two.

Should work. DVI is DVI is DVI.

Hmmmmm, well since component is analog it would definately bypass the HDCP problem....

I wonder though if that device would work...

HD Box ------> component cables ----> dvi/component adapter ----> Dell 17" LCD

You would think so but all these adapters are ATI made with some proprierty ATI driver software to make them work. They don't work on Nvidia cards, so I don't know if they would work on an HDTV reciever.

That adapter only works with ati vid cards.

I have this adapter and it's designed to go DVI output to Component output. I don't know if it would work the other way around, taking a component signal and changing it into DVI. I don't have anything with DVI input to test it with or I'd let you know.

I doubt the conversion works bi-directionally. It's designed to go from the DVI end of a video card (IN) to the component end of a TV (OUT). You're trying to flip it around.

I could be wrong, but I doubt it.
