If by safe you mean being kidnapped, driven to Iraq, and then ending up on a video while someone chanting "Allahu Akbar" saws your head off, then yes.

I was considering doing a Contiki tour to Greece and Turkey. I always assumed that Turkey wasn't really the safest of places to visit, but I guess if they're offering tours there, surely it's not TOO bad, is it?

Turkey is one of the best places I've visited and given the chance I'd go back. Granted it's been about 10 years since I was there. Greece on the other hand is nice during the day but at night it's best not to be out alone in dark places. In case you're wondering, I've been to Ankara Turkey and Rhodes Greece.

You can replace the word Turkey with USA in the paragraph above, because the US does get the occasional bombings, shootings, kidnappings, and detains by the police.Warning
Turkey is generally safe, but domestic and regional tensions result in occasional waves of low-level violence, particularly bombings. Such bomb attacks are often aimed at targets that represents Western interests, such as banks and consulates.
So far, travellers have not been specifically targeted by terrorists and suicide bombers. However, there is always the danger that travellers will find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. The best defence is to maintain a modest profile and be aware of current events.
Wow, how ignorant and close-minded of you to even list countries you'd only "consider" visting. BTW, if you haven't been with the program, the beheadings are occuring in the Middle East. It's so typical of Americans to feel safe in their own country when the world has so much more to offer. And France on a dare? Oh please ...Originally posted by: Fritzo
Only other countires I would even CONSIDER visiting are:
1) Britian
2) Germany
3) Japan
4) Anywhere in Australia
5) Spain
6) France (on a dare)
7) Canada, but Canada sucks
Why? Because you have 99% less chance of becoming beheaded in these places.

I've been all over Greece (both mainland and islands) and never felt unsafe at night. Maybe you were just in a shadier section of town?
I suppose since I'm Greek (and also look Greek and know the language fairly well), I'm probably more comfortable there, but I see no reason for anyone to feel afraid in that country.
Military guys carrying Uzis around Athens and Salonika is kinda intimidating though. :Q

I was in Greece last October and felt completely safe. The had done a heck of a job fixing stuff up in the country for the Olympics.
As for the police, one cop startled me because he was standing out of sight in a darkened doorway holding a HK MP5. LOL.
Cab rides (especially Athens) in Greece are fun too. Traffic laws must be merely suggestions.

Turkey is a safe country to visit.
Just don't wear anything that says Greece on it 🙂
Or vice versa.
What about my American flag t-shirt to both countries?

My parents did Greece and Turkey, my parents did not feel safe in Turkey. When they first got to Turkey, they got off the ferry and the people who ran the ferry kept all of their passports, which did not make them comfortable at all. Not to mention you have to pay to use the washroom. (lame) 😛
