I'd find it very amusing if Trump bowed out, but I do not see that happening.

I don't know man. Dan Quail was, afaik, the first confirmed moron to run for such a high profile public office (bested later only by Palin--I think we should leave Stockdale off the hook because that poor guy was by all accounts incredibly smart and a great Admiral, but just awful in such a public space).

I don't think Pence is the same in any way. He's scary, sure--but in an effective evil sort of way; not an aloof Forrest Gump-stumbling-on-the-button sort of way that was Quail.

I doubt Pence is on the same level as Quail incompetence, but he is along the same lines and doubt a lot of things have manifested Nationally.

I don't think it helps as much as you think. I doubt there's any Republican I could see myself voting for this year. And although I won't vote for Hillary there are several other Democrats I'd vote for. All counterfactual I know but doubt I'm alone.

A townhall? One person after another asking Trump how he can defend being Hitler, asks him to just leave, etc. It'll be both fascinating and highly uncomfortable to watch.

I've seen his type before. People like Mr. Trump would rather die than lose face. He will be there to gather votes come November.

In any case, up here in Toronto we've seen this exact situation play out. Rob Ford became very sick, and despite ceasing campaigning still got ~40% of the vote. It's still going to be close.

If he gets enough of his supporters thinking the election was stolen from them, things could get really ugly really fast.

So it's highly unlikely that Republicans can do anything about Trump, and almost equally unlikely that Trump would bow out on his own. But what's to stop Pence from jumping ship--especially if he wants to salvage any possibility of running on the national stage in the future? If Pence were to drop out (on the heels of a winning debate performance) would he really by labeled a traitor by the GOP, or would he be praised by conservatives and evangelicals? The even bigger question--who would replace him?

Pence wins regardless IMO:

1. Had he not taken the VP slot, he had a very tough battle to be re-elected governor and had a very solid chance of losing. He would've had a rematch against John Gregg, who he narrowly defeated in 2012. So, taking the VP spot was an easy way out of that spot and would put him in the national spotlight.
2. If Trump somehow wins the election (which isn't going to happen), Pence gets the VP spot and would likely be the next Republican nominee.
3. If Trump loses the election, Pence is going to look like the sane statesman of the two and still come out as a frontrunner in 2020.
4. If Pence got fed up and dropped out, he would look principled and be the frontrunner in 2020.

It was no accident that Pence didn't defend Trump in the debate - Pence knows Trump is indefensible and is positioning himself for 2020. As a resident of the state where Pence is the governor, I can tell you he pretty much sucks and rode Mitch Daniels' coat tails.

Trump is going to go all in on attacking Bill Clinton. A hand that Republicans lost on already in 1998. An issue that Hillary had at least 20 years of practice on, and Trump just decided to desperately start trying. After Trump has effectively admitted molesting women.
