I got roped into helping screen some people for a new position on the project I am working on. We get a lot of ex-military types applying and two of them have masters degrees from Troy State University. My boss highlighted those in our online system and commented "ha ha". That's it "ha ha".

I know Troy State is acreddited, but not much beyond that. How is Troy State regarded.

Would someone expect something else from a lower tier state university, in Alabama no less.

All lower tier state schools are crappy, but its better than nothing, which is what alot of people would have.

Personally, I've never heard of it until I read this thread and googled it.

ITT tech huh?? That is pretty low. It seems to be very popular amongst military folks though.

Its a state school, that almost anyone can get into. Bottom line is, its a lesser state school in Alabama, that has several campuses. It gets ~$35-40million (just digging up numbers on google) from Alabama a year.

Is it just me or does it really make no difference what school you go to just so long as you know the material? I live in RIT land, and I know several people who have graduated from RIT with a CS degree who don't know what recursion is....essentially showing me that the degree means nothing. I've also met several people from other 'joke' schools who were amoung the best programmer's I've met.

(Don't get me wrong, I'm sure most RIT grads are very skilled.....I'm just saying that you can't make your basis entirely off the school's name).

Maybe they go there part-time while working... might be the only university close by.

True. I'm actually from AL and Troy State didn't even have a very good reputation there. None of the schools in AL are really any good for undergrad. You've got to go out of state.

Yeah, but you are an elitist asshole... Not everyone can afford Vanderbilt or even wants to go there. I was accepted there and I had the money, but I didn't want to be around elitist assholes like you. Actually it was more that Mississippi State offered me a scholarship and is number one in my former major, and Vandy didn't even offer my major. Yeah, I love people who judge someone solely on where they got their degree from. Troy State is no Harvard, but it certainly is not anything like ITT tech. It is a major Division I University with over 18k students and several campuses.

Troy State is a state university on par with every state university in the country.....take it as that. The military aspect is that they have mini-campuses on military bases around the world.

You are a jackass....
Ummm.... Auburn?

LOL! My fiancee got me some Troy State stuff for Xmas (since my real name is Troy haha). It's no ivy league, but it's a decent enough school. A lot of military people go there because they are very good about working with the military lifestyle. They are very liberal with transferring credits from other schools, and they are also very liberal about letting you take a hiatus if you get shipped somewhere that you can't take classes.

Troy State, from what I know, is more of a musical school.

Their band still sucks however.

it is the closest Univ. to Fort Rucker Alabama, a very large Army base

where do you want them to go while they are stationed there? they should drive two hours north to Auburn?

see my post above, it is close to a large Army base, so maybe that is why people that are stationed close to Troy State go there for an education

Rucker is actually one of the smallest Army bases.....but they also have a campus near Ft Benning, although it is another small base as far as permanent party troops are concerned.

Ft Rucker has been around a long time, perhaps it was larger in the past

and yes, Ft Benning is fairly close

i just think a lot of people are dissing on these military guys for pursuing their education in some fashion. doing something is better than getting out of the military with no skills and no education and gettting a McJob

I don't know enough about Troy State University to knock it, but the undergraduate admissions requirements seem kind of low on the main page.

2.0 GPA? 18 ACT? 870 combined SAT?

Does even one person on here realize that a degree from Joe Blow University(not that Troy St. is) is infinately better than dropping out of high school and definately better than simply a high school diploma. As stated Troy State has multiple classes and is very close to a military base. Also it is located near one of the poorest areas in the nation(south central Alabama) and most of the people from that area a re probably glad Troy State exists.

It's a state school. Check the reqs. for your state schools, I doubt they are any better.
