Ok

I keep hearing about Trillian being a great prog that reunite all of the most popular chat softwares into one (MSN Messenger , Yahoo messenger , ICQ , IRC etc etc ).

I am very tempted to download it but i have heard rumors that in the past in was bundled with spywares (weatherbug in particular). Is this true ?

Also , what's the difference between the normal and pro version ?

And finally , is it the kind of programs that is bundled with so much stuff (not spywares but useless functions) that it become annoying ? (IE : Netscape lol)

Now i know that may be i should just download it and see for myself but i wouldn't like to install some spywares on my comp if Trillian have any :)

I can tell firsthand that trillian never had any spyware whatsoever, I've been using it from before the 2.0 and 3.0 and never has there been any version that came with spyware.

Pro allows the use of various plugins. For example, the mini browser plugin. the basic version does not allow you to display html profiles in AIM (dunno how that works for other connections, as I really only use aim). I personally don't think it's worth the $25 (which is only good for a year long license). But it does have nice features such as history in the chat window, and a text based history I can access without the program on (which is my biggest gripe w/ GAIM).

besides the plugins feature, the pro version also allows video features. Those are really the only differences. I personally love the plugins so that alone is worth it for me. I use the News(RSS)/Weather/Stocks/Mail plugins and they serve all those features in one app - no need for smaller separate apps to sit in my systray doing the same thing.

Trillian has no spyware. It *is* rather bloated and a resource hog, but it's still the best all-in-one IM client I've ever used. I'm using v0.74 w/ patch "I" and the Microscopic skin.

It's as bloated as people say. A lot has gone into optimizing the code. ATM, I'm connected to AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, and Rendezvous running plugins for weather (cabriometer), mail (mymail), gmail, sharewatcher, and shipment tracker (tracks tracking numbers for FedEx, UPS, etc), and Trillian's footprint is ~7-8MB in my RAM. Last time I ran AIM alone, it took up 33MB of ram. Now which one is the resource hog?

Edit: running version 3.1 pro (beta)

Trillian is the best IM client in existence but 2.0 r0x0rs and 3.0 is teh ghey. In 3.0 they got rid of .txt-based log files and they also took away the ability to put your user folder wherever you want on your HDD.

2.0 Pro is awesome.

Wait long enough and someone will claim that every program ever written is bloated.

Even that's been much improved in version 3.1 with the new uPNP features.

trillian Pro is the ShizNaT, but you have to haXoR that cuz its not worth $25 or whatever it costs.

the file transfer is 100% reliable for small files, but games and large programs will fail when you try, but otherwise its the most comprehensive program you will ever use.

oh and the .txt logs are still in v 3.0, you have to find it in the root directory under users.
trust me, it's there.

1000000000000000000% better than aim.

dl it right now

Trillian has some share of problems with file transfer and webcam. I am using Trillian Pro 3.0 and I don't use file transfer or webcam just to chat that;s all.

3.1 is in beta testing and resolves some issues with a lot of things... adds some features (aim profile wysiwyg creation and irc enhancement)

check out thier forums at www.ceruleanstudios.com to see recent happenings...

i've been a pro subscriber for a couple years now and have been nothing but happy

Trillian has never, EVER been bundled with spyware. The word "software" is both singular and plural.

Trillian seriously kicks ass. I've been a Pro subscriber since a few days after 1.0 Pro came out; I've never looked back and I will never use anything else.

trillian 3 DOES keep text based logs (just wanted to re-emphasize that). That was one of my big pluses for it. I should also add it has it's own graphical type viewer which is really nice. Altho, importing old logs (say after a format) broke it for me.

What do you mean by importing old logs broke it for you?

Sorry about the .txt logs statement, I saw .xml files under in the \user\logs\screename\AIM folder, and assumed it started to keep history like AIM does, in .html files or something similar.

But anyway, I keep my user directory in My Documents (makes sense when you think about it, instead of being in the \Trillian directory), and 3.1 did not let me choose. Lame.

Plus, I didn't really see any advantages, but if you say file transfers are better then that is one.

Trillian is cool, I used some of the earlier versions, but it was a bit too bloated for me, the UI was kinda slow, etc. I only used it for an IRC client, not IM, which is where its real strengths are. I switched back to mIRC, because it was just so much faster and more efficient for me.

well, i don't think there's an official "import" but after setting up trillian the way it was before i formatted, i dropped the logs into the folder i specified, but the trillian log browser did not see them for some reason... and it wouldn't show any future logs either. I didn't care too much so I just started from scratch.
