Not unless all of humanity reaches enlightenment
judging from current events, I think it's going to be a while before that happens

Thats my question essentially. CAN humans reach that level of enlightenment?

screw religious differences, different sports teams alone will ensure it will never happen.

If everyone had about 100 ICBMs I don't think war would ever happen. (assuming all counties were trully democratic) Read some Emmanual Kant he talks about this stuff and is thought to be correct by most.

But this wouldn't stop the violence that may or may not be inherit to being a human, it would just cause the consequences of violence on the scale of a war to be so horrible that nobody would consider it.

what about crazy ppl? :D

i think it's possible. if we have the technology to monitor and control everyone or the technology to geneticly alter people to filter out traits that leads to war ie make everybody a devote pacifist but that also requires a lot of "training"

The needs of one will always conflict with the needs of another. Conflict, in some form, is inevitable. How we deal with that conflict, however, is up for debate. ;)

If the only way to remove violence from our culture is through genetic engineering would that imply that violence is inherit in our existance as humans? Would the resulting pacifists still be human?

Well there is no way we get accepted into the Federation unless we are "one people"

then are we still human?

probably not human by today's standards. but what's so wrong about changing who we are? if we have the technology to artificially evolve to become "better" than human, i'm all for it

I think as long as not just one person can "push the button" we are all good. Maybe we need a doomsday machine like in Dr. Stranglove where are predefined series of events must take place before it goes off? Like if radiation levels reach a certain point (after a bomb goes off type levels) the machine in each country generates a "doomsday shroud" which covers the earth and kills all life.

Individual humans do it all the time, so logic is telling me that it is possible for everybody to be enlightened.
If a global age of reason ever becomes a reality, it is going to manifest itself all at once as singular enlightenment gets lost in the sea of ignorance. I suspect that the right catalyst could potentially "wake everybody up".

The catalyst would have to come in a form that affected everybody equally and would require the human race to band together for survival, ie. WWIII aftermath, alien invaders, asteroid heading toward earth, etc.

They'd prolly gain our trust by eating saddam first. (remember that in V they ate people).

Then we'd have some animal rights groups protest, and we'd end up putting grafitti all over their ships. Greenpeace would come in saying the spraypaint was toxic to the atmosphere, so we'd have to scrub down the ships and coat them with anti-spraypaint stuff. Then the gov't would complain that it was costing too much to clean all those ships. Osama would try and crash a 747 into the saucer....they'd eat him too. We'd regard them as heroes and have to shell out the reward for osama. Gov't says it's too expensive and asks the world to chip in to say thanks. France acts french and starts serving out tea in cups and "non-saucers". Americans act american and rename freedom fries back to french fries so that they can be renamed saucer fries. Aliens get fed up and just leave because, after eating saddam and osama, they have developed a bad case of food poisoning.
